Department Manager
Reports to: Production Manager

Position Summary: The Department Manager or Area Coordinator is responsible for managing and directing the daily activities and resources of all assigned production departments. The Department Manager or Area Coordinator position is crucial to create a world-class production environment.
Duties / Responsibilities:
- Enforce Clayton’s safety culture by adhering to and enforcing the safety stop audit program.
- Participate in Safety training meetings as requested for continuous education on new guidelines
- Conduct routine tool and equipment safety inspection as required
- Hold team members accountable that violate the company’s safety policy
- Own new hire onboarding and development experience following the job skills training program including utilizing training material, tracking their development in the Responsibility Matrix and providing real-time feedback.
- Select, evaluate, & retain department or area team members.
- Communicate the significance of the data on Communication Center slides daily during huddles
- Coach, correct and counsel team members. Utilize the progressive discipline documentation system appropriately.
- Read and check off orders as each unit is built
- Ensure traveler is signed correctly
- Enforce the “Zero Defect Hand-off” program. All defects must be addressed in assigned station(s)
- Ensure defects are corrected by the root Team Member to teach & eliminate repeat occurrences
- Conduct routine material inspections to avoid shortages and building defects into the home
- Participate in Quality training opportunities as requested for continuous education
- Ensure clean department(s) before, during and after work using 5 min clean-ups. Don’t leave until team has the area “Clayton Clean”.
- Support ISO14001 initiatives (recycling program)
- Tool lockers and Comm centers must be “Clayton Clean” and organized
- Monitors and ensure that daily production is met, according to specified standards of quality and performance.
- Evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of production processes.
- Ensure work is done well, safely, and in according to code and customer requirements.
- Actively participate and engage in leadership/planning meetings and efforts
- Consults with other leaders to ask for help from other departments to meet production.
- Communicates any production quality or safety issues when arises.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent experience
- Previous construction experience strongly preferred
- Experience in manufactured housing is greatly desired
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills at all levels
- Microsoft Word, Excel, as well as basic math skills
- Must be detail-oriented and can multi-task effectively
- Ability to read and understand home building specifications greatly desired
- Demonstrated adherence to safety protocols
- Ability to adapt quickly and make sound decisions in a changing, fast-paced work environment
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Work may require stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, pushing, and / or pulling.
- Must be able to communicate with others via phone, email, and in person. Must be able to exchange accurate information with others.
- Work environment is not temperature controlled and may result in exposure to extreme temperatures.
- Work primarily involves sitting / standing, up to 4 hours at a time.
