The Laboratory Support Supervisor provides administrative and technical leadership for the Phlebotomy Services in the Hospital and the Specimen Processing Service in the Laboratory.
The supervisor accepts clinical and technical guidance from the Administrative Director of the Laboratory as well as the Medical Director.
As an integral part of the laboratory management team this supervisor works collaboratively with all members of the department.
Responsible for all scheduling and training of staff, accurate specimen collection/handling and front line problem resolution for Support Services staff in Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing. Ensures process and procedural effectiveness in the Specimen Processing area.
Maintains high quality service standards consistent with department goals and expectations.
Works toward continuous improvement in services to internal and external customers.
Accepts full responsibility for full training and oversight of all Support Services personnel
Assures compliance with regulatory agencies including but not limited to: JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, DPH, HCFA, NCCLS and CLIA. Meets Department standard of inspection readiness at all times.
Is able to successfully explain to inspectors how Support Services comply with standards and regulations.
Schedules staff and assigns workload as necessary.
Performs quality indicator reviews insuring completeness.
Writes reviews and updates all procedures as they relate to Laboratory Support Services functions.
Provides appropriate orientation to all new employees and current employees on new procedures on a timely basis.
Assesses competence of Support Services staff and certifies their adherence to continuing education requirements.
Assesses annual performance of Support Service staff.
Takes disciplinary action as necessary.
Is familiar with all Hospital policies that effect the smooth functioning of the section (payroll purchasing, human resources, etc.).
Follows organizational and departmental policies regarding safety, record keeping and regulatory requirements, to provide for the quality care of patients.
Conducts self in a professional manner at all times.
Handles billing rejections and assists coders with lab related questions.
Conducts instrument trouble shooting and coordinates service as needed.
