ABOUT THE ROLE
At 3Degrees, we are committed to advancing a decarbonized future through bold, swift, and equitable climate action. We do this work by originating, marketing, selling, and trading environmental commodities such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Carbon Credits, and Clean Fuel Standard Credits. As a member of our Research and Analysis team within the Environmental Markets (EM) division, you’ll apply your analytical and strategic expertise, to conduct market analysis, develop supply and demand models, and track portfolio trends.
As a Market Analyst-NA, you'll play a critical role in shaping the environmental commodities market while driving real-world impact. You’ll serve as a bridge between data analysis, trading strategies, and market insights. Your responsibilities include developing innovative forecasting tools, translating complex datasets into actionable insights, and shaping trading strategies. Your expertise will go beyond supporting the trading desk—you'll challenge conventional thinking, identify strategic gaps, and introduce innovative solutions to improve our trading performance.
This is a full-time opportunity within the 3Degrees Environmental Markets division, based in Portland, ME, reporting to the Manager of Market Analysis. Exceptional candidates within commuting distance to our office hubs in San Francisco, CA; Portland, Oregon; or New York, NY will also be considered.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
As a Market Analyst, you will work closely with the trading, regulatory affairs, and data management teams to improve market intelligence, forecasting models, and strategic decision-making. Your work will focus on two key areas:
- Market Reporting & Trading Strategy
- Conduct weekly position and performance reviews for the North America Trading team.
- Monitor portfolio trends and collaborate with traders to identify and capitalize on market opportunities.
- Deliver data-driven trading recommendations to portfolio managers and contribute to strategic decision-making for carbon and clean fuel markets.
Partner with the Data Management team to enhance automation, improve data infrastructure, and develop real-time trading dashboards
Market Forecasting & Quantitative Modeling
- Develop proprietary market forecasting models using Python, Excel, and Tableau to predict environmental commodity price movements.
- Apply sensitivity analysis and advanced statistical techniques to refine forecasting accuracy and improve trading strategies.
Collaborate closely with Regulatory Affairs to assess policy and legislative changes and their potential market impact, particularly within North American carbon and clean fuel markets.

We believe an individual with the following skills will thrive in this role:
3 years of experience developing statistical models and supply/demand forecasting tools, ideally in North American carbon and clean fuel markets (e.g., California Carbon Allowances, LCFS)
- Knowledge of additional environmental markets, including voluntary carbon, renewable energy, renewable natural gas, and power markets (preferred but not required)
- Expertise in Python-based modeling, including multivariate techniques, options pricing models, and technical analysis
- Strong ability to track market trends and interpret the impact of policy and legislative changes on environmental markets
- Meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to detect anomalies in large datasets and enhance forecasting accuracy
- Proven ability to collaborate in team-based environments and drive shared goals.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex data clearly to diverse audiences
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and perform well under pressure.
- Proficiency in Excel, Python, and Tableau (knowledge of SQL, VBA, or R is a plus)
BA/BS degree in economics, quantitative finance, statistics, or a related field is preferred
HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS
Within 30 days:
Gain a thorough understanding of North American carbon and clean fuel markets, 3Degrees’ portfolio, and the trading team's objectives through onboarding assessments and participation in strategy meetings
- Build meaningful cross-functional relationships with stakeholders across trading, regulatory affairs, sales, and data management by attending at least three collaborative discussions or cross-functional meetings
- Provide at least two data-backed insights during weekly performance reviews, contributing to trading strategy discussions
Complete training on key reporting tools (Tableau, Python, Excel) to improve forecasting accuracy and automation
Within 90 days:
Take full ownership of routine reporting and performance reviews for the North America Trading team, ensuring timely and accurate delivery with minimal supervision
- Produce at least three actionable insights using Tableau, Python, and Excel, successfully integrating them into trading strategies with feedback from the trading team
Deliver at least one preliminary supply and demand forecast model using third-party data, refining it with feedback from the Manager of Market Analysis
Within 6 months:
Deliver at least three data-driven recommendations implemented by the trading team, establishing yourself as a primary source of analytical insight
- Proactively identify and address inefficiencies in trading performance or forecasting models, proposing improvements backed by quantitative analysis
Lead at least two rounds of backtesting and refining proprietary models to enhance forecast accuracy, validated by the trading team
Within 1 year:
Deliver and implement at least five strategic recommendations, establishing yourself as a trusted thought partner for the trading team
- Enhance trading accuracy and portfolio performance by refining forecasting models, integrating real-time market trends, and improving risk assessment strategies
Contribute to at least two cross-functional projects that enhance market insights and trading strategies, driving progress toward decarbonization goals
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Compensation: The starting base salary for this position is $81,000-$104,000 in the US. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, role requirements, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise
