About the Library
The Waterbury Public Library (WPL) is a vibrant hub of community life. This 5,000 sq. ft. library provides a pleasant, airy and light-filled space for patrons and staff alike. WPL provides access to books, information, computers, programs and events for all ages, and educational opportunities for a wide variety of patrons. Our space provides places for people to connect, learn, browse and meet. The Library is overseen by a Board of 5 elected Commissioners, and is a department within the Town of Waterbury municipal government. WPL has an active Friends group, loyal volunteers, an engaged Commission, and a very supportive community. There are three full time and four part time staff.
The Position
We are seeking an experienced, creative, forward-thinking and organized person to maintain a safe an inviting space for the youth of Waterbury. The successful candidate must have the skills and enthusiasm to engage with families, children and teens with warmth, good humor and knowledge of child development needs. This position is 35-37.5 hours per week with a full array of benefits.
Our Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor’s Degree required; MLIS or Vermont Certificate in Public Librarianship strongly preferred.
- At least two years of experience working in a library providing programming and services for children and / or young adults.
- Broad knowledge of a wide range of children’s and young adult literature.
- Passion for the role of public libraries as community hubs, centers of learning, and transformative institutions.
- Technologically capable. Basic graphic design experience preferred.
- Strong social media skills (e.g., Facebook, Instagram) and virtual communication tools (e.g., Zoom).
- Broad knowledge of the current youth landscape and trends, child development, early literacy best practices, and education standards.
- Passion for working closely with children, teens, and their caregivers with imagination and enthusiasm.
- Successful in cultivating positive, collaborative working relationships with co-workers, patrons, and volunteers as part of a coordinated team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Capacity to multi-task and prioritize competing demands while remaining calm, positive, and detail-oriented.
- Regular evening and weekend hours generally include one evening per week and one Saturday per month.
