Role

The Child Welfare Transportation Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safe and timely transportation of children in foster care to and from appointments, visits, court hearings, school, or other scheduled activities. This role requires a high level of responsibility, professionalism, and sensitivity to the unique needs of children in the foster care system

Essential Job Functions

  • Transportation Services :

Safely transport children to and from scheduled appointments, visitations, school, and other activities as assigned.

  • Follow pre-determined routes and schedules while adapting to last-minute changes, if necessary.
  • Child Welfare & Safety :

    • Ensure children are secure during transit using age-appropriate car seats or seat belts.

  • Monitor and respond appropriately to children’s needs and behavior during transport.
  • Documentation & Reporting :

    • Maintain accurate records of trips, including mileage, times, and child behavior.

  • Report any concerns, incidents, or safety issues to the assigned case manager promptly.
  • Professional Communication :

    • Communicate respectfully and effectively with children, foster parents, biological families, and caseworkers.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all case details in accordance with company policies and regulations.
  • Vehicle Maintenance :

    • Keep the assigned vehicle clean, well-maintained, and stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., snacks, toys, or car seats).

  • Report vehicle issues or maintenance needs to the appropriate department.

    • Required Education / Training / Certifications

  • Education & Experience :

    • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Previous experience working with children or in child welfare is a plus.

    • Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Requirements for Drivers

  • Licensing :

    • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • If transporting multiple passengers in larger vehicles (e.g., vans), a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required, depending on capacity.
  • Driver Fitness :

    • Ability to meet the FDOT medical standards for drivers, including vision and physical health requirements.

  • Vehicle Safety Compliance :

    • Adherence to all FDOT safety regulations, including vehicle inspections and proper maintenance

  • Use of child restraint devices (car seats, booster seats) as required by Florida State law for children under 5 years of age and weight requirements.
  • Compliance with seatbelt use for all passengers.
  • Compliance with all Florida State driving laws, including those related to speed limits and texting while driving.
  • Training & Certifications :
  • Completion of any required FDOT-approved defensive driving or passenger transport training.
  • Understanding and adherence to Florida’s Move Over Law and other road safety rules.
  • Substance Screening :

    • Participation in drug and alcohol screening as required under FDOT and company policies.

  • Licensing & Certifications :

    • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid (or willingness to obtain).

    • Required Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and patient in stressful situations.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and sensitivity required when working with children and families.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet changing schedules and needs.

    • Physical and Mental Requirements of the Job :

  • Transportation often requires travel in various weather conditions and across different regions.
  • Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds and install car seats or assist children entering and exiting the vehicle.
  • May involve exposure to emotionally challenging situations or behaviors.
  • Visual acuity to read, prepare, and analyze data, and characters on reports and on computer terminal, visual inspection of documents, and similar objects or items at a distance generally close to the eyes.
  • Must be in good health with any conditions that could impact ability to perform duties of this role managed by a licensed physician.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to address and prioritize multiple tasks within established time frames.
  • Engage in self-care strategies to build and maintain resiliency.

    • As with all employees of 4Sisters, employee must pass extensive background screening required of our license and organization. These include Level 2 clearance in child welfare, local law enforcement, social media review, and Diana Screen® (www.dianascreen.com).
