A Better Chance (ABC) of Wilton is looking for a dynamic, action-oriented Resident Director (or Co-Directors) for the school year—a live-in leadership role where you’ll mentor, inspire, and uplift high-achieving high school Scholars of color as they pursue their dreams at Wilton High School.

A Better Chance is a national non-profit organization that provides highly motivated high school students of color the opportunity to attend outstanding public and private high schools throughout the United States. A Better Chance of Wilton is a Community School Program affiliated with A Better Chance National.
Job Requirements:
- Education required: bachelor’s degree or an associate degree.
- Strong, interpersonal skills.
- Computer skills; Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google and Google Calendar.
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience working with and developing young adults in their teens and serving as a mentor/model of successful behavior.
- Prior experience in education, social work, and/or counseling.
- A problem solver and self-starter with common sense and mature judgement.
- A good listener and evaluator of information, particularly when dealing with adolescents.
- An ability to maintain a high level of communication, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and insurance; owning a passenger vehicle.
- Passing a background check.
- Three references.
Key Responsibilities/Role:
- Demonstrate a commitment to the mission, goals, and culture of ABC with particular interest in excellence in education.
- Provide an outstanding, encouraging and positive role model and example for the Scholars.
- Live at the ABC house when the program is in session during the school year and supervise the Scholars when they are in the house.
- Establish and enforce house guidelines in line with the objectives of the ABC of Wilton program as found in the ABC of Wilton Handbook.
- Establish a healthy, family environment considerate of the needs of all Scholars; an environment that is essential to the success and happiness of the Scholars.
- Mindful presence that each Scholar is an individual, who possesses different strengths, learns differently and responds differently to stimuli.
- Supervise the daily activities of the Scholars – academic, extracurricular, social, and interpersonal activities.
- Serve as the Scholars’ primary academic monitor by overseeing daily study hall, checking academic progress, and collaborating with the Academic Coordinator and/or tutors to support their success. The RD should stay informed about homework, assessments, and upcoming assignments while maintaining open communication with the academic liaison and the Academic Committee of the Board.
- Celebrate Scholar life and promote awareness by documenting and sharing academic achievements and everyday moments with the ABC Marketing/Social Media liaison.
- Stay informed and engaged by monitoring activities and opportunities for Scholar within the Wilton Community
- Oversee house finances in line with the annual budget and provide monthly spending reports to the Executive Director and ABC Treasurer. Maintain accurate and complete records of expenditures and demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
- Oversee the daily operation and maintenance of the ABC house.
- Offer off site activities, including one or two outings per month, as well as recreational and volunteer opportunities for the Scholars when they remain in town for the weekend.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Year-round private quarters in the ABC of Wilton house including utilities.
- Meals provided during the academic year except Sundays, Host/Family weekends, holidays and school vacations.
- Academic year stipend based on qualifications.
- No benefits provided; ABC Wilton is not a sponsor of any employee benefit plan.
Note: The Resident Director(s) may be employed full or part-time elsewhere during school hours while working for ABC provided that:
- Such employment does not preclude carrying out the responsibilities listed above.
- The Resident Director(s) is on the premises until the last Scholars have left for school.
- The Resident Director is home on Monday through Thursday by 5:45 p.m. in time for dinner at 6 p.m. On those days the cook is responsible for the girls when they arrive home from school.
- On Fridays, the Resident Director(s) is home beginning at 3:00 p.m. (Coverage negotiable if holding another job.)
- The Resident Director(s) is home on weekends and school holidays unless the scholars are with their Host Families or home.
- There is some flexibility for working from home if a scholar is ill and cannot attend school. (The Executive Director may also be able to provide support in these situations.)
