Position Overview: We are seeking qualified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters to provide professional interpreting services for the Maryland School for the Deaf, ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and providing equal access to communication for all parents, students, staff, and community members [2.1.4].
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of five (5) years' experience as a certified interpreter [11]
- Must possess one or more current, valid certifications from the following:
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification: CI/CT, CSC, MCSC, OTC, CDI, or RSC
- National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Certification level 3, 4, or 5
- NAD/RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC, NIC Advanced, or NIC Master) [11]
- Must be licensed by the Maryland State Board of Sign Language Interpreters (as of January 1st, 2025) [11]
- Background check may be required [9]
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide interpretation services for various settings, including:
- Tier 1: Legal components, IEPs, Board Meetings, Leadership Meetings
- Tier 2: Large group meetings, training sessions, staff meetings
- Tier 3: Small group meetings, athletic events, two-person meetings [5]
- Maintain minimum two-hour availability per assignment [8]
- Provide both in-person and virtual interpreting services as needed
- Travel to off-campus locations within DMV area when required
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all information accessed during assignments [9]
- Adhere to RID standards for interpretation, Code of Professional Conduct, and Code of Ethics [11]
Work Requirements:
- Must be available for both in-person and virtual interpreting sessions
- May need to work as part of an interpreter team for longer assignments
- Minimum 48-hour notice required for assignment cancellation [9]
- Must monitor school closing announcements during inclement weather [9]
Travel and Compensation:
- Fixed hourly rates based on service tier and type (in-person, virtual, CDI)
