Job Title: School Nurse
Location: Middle School Building
Reports to: Building Principal and Executive Director
Salary Range: School Year Instructional Salary Scale, $51,324 - $99,533
Job Summary:
The School Nurse plays a vital role in supporting student health and wellness, promoting a safe school environment, and ensuring compliance with state and federal health regulations. This individual will provide direct nursing care, health education, and support services to students, staff, and families.
This job description outlines the core duties and responsibilities for the position. It is not meant to be an exhaustive list of all tasks that may be required in this role. The ideal candidate should be flexible and adaptable in meeting the evolving needs of the District.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct nursing care to students and staff, including first aid, medication administration, and emergency response.
- Assess and manage acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, and communicable diseases.
- Maintain accurate health records and documentation in compliance with state regulations and school policies.
- Conduct mandated health screenings and immunization compliance reviews.
- Develop and implement Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for students with medical conditions.
- Collaborate with school staff, families, and community health providers to support student well-being.
- Provide health counseling and education to students, parents, and staff.
- Ensure a safe and healthy school environment by monitoring infection control and promoting health initiatives.
- Meets with Mentor/District Nurse Leader on a regular basis to discuss questions, concerns, development, and goals.
- Have the availability to confidently assess students and prioritize needs.
- Participate in professional development and maintain current nursing and school health knowledge.
Qualifications:
- Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.
- Degree from an accredited nursing program.
- A Bachelor's degree or proof of current enrollment in a BSN program with completion within two years.
- Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) certification or minimal comparable MTEL requirements.
- SEI Endorsement preferred.
- A minimum of two full years of employment as a Registered Nurse in a child health, community health, or other relevant clinical nursing setting.
- DESE license or working towards DESE licensure
- Current CPR Adult/Child and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a school setting.
- Experience with electronic medical records and documentation required.
Additional Requirements:
- Background check and fingerprinting as required by Massachusetts state regulations.
- Ability to work in compliance with federal, state, and district policies and regulations.
- Completion of any required professional development or certifications as mandated by the District.
Work Environment:
- School-based setting with occasional travel for professional development or district meetings.
- Requires frequent walking, standing, and occasional lifting of medical supplies or students in emergency situations.
- Some travel between classrooms and school buildings may be required.
