What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Trades Teacher position at Abilene High School?
Abilene Public Schools (USD #435), Abilene, KS, is currently seeking a full-time Industrial Arts/Technology Teacher to begin in August of the 2025-2026 school year.
QUALIFICATIONS (General)
- A valid KS Teaching License or the ability to obtain one with appropriate endorsement(s)
- A demonstrated philosophy that all students can and will learn.
- Excellent attendance record.
- Excellent communication skills oral and written.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Best Instructional Practices.
- Positive interpersonal skills.
- Professional verification of successful classroom teacher performance and/or student teaching experience.
- Evidence of the willingness and the ability to comply with the standards for ethical and professional performance established by the State Board of Education.
- This individual will exhibit skills pertinent to foster positive human relationships and the ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents and the community.
- A willingness to demonstrate abilities conducive to a continuous quest for quality education.
QUALIFICATIONS SPECIFIC TO THE BUILDING TRADES POSITION:
- Completion of a bachelor’s level program in Industrial Arts and/or Building Trades and/or Carpentry. A highly qualified candidate will also hold appropriate state certification as an Industrial Arts and/or Building Trades and/or Carpentry teacher and have completed a teacher preparation program and/or educational degree.
- Minimum requirement: Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in a related field, which could improve the candidate’s ability to pass the PRAXIS for Industrial Technology teaching.
- Ability to maintain a KS teaching license in the area of Industrial Arts and/or Building Trades and/or Carpentry.
TEACHER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position is for an 8-hour day, with 189 days a year, following the district's teacher contract expectations.
- Use state and national resources to provide quality instruction in the area of Industrial Arts and/or Industrical Technology.
- Maintain communication with the administration, staff and periodically the board of education regarding the application of Industrial Arts and/or Industrical Technology.
- Plan and teach classes in the area of Building Trades and Carpentry.
- Actively support various educational pathways.
- Collaborate with teachers of other industrial arts oriented classes to provide essential basics for these courses.
- Other duties designed to increase student engagement, maintain instructional resources, protect the welfare of students and support collegial relationships.
Job Goals: To ensure student growth as learners in the application of Industrial Arts and/or Industrical Technology.
General Tasks
- Develop, lead, and/or teach educational programs which focus on: 1) carpentry shop safety; 2) framing; 3) infrastructure systems (electricity,plumbing and HVAC); 4) drywall installation; 5) promoting construction applications for a variety of career considerations; 6) woodworking projects; 7) hands on learning experiences.
- Use proven, research-based teaching methods to instruct students and perhaps community members on these curriculum areas.
- Implement educational programs which strengthen individuals’ interest in crafting wood working projects and construction/building trades career opportunities.
- Demonstrate an interest is providing students opportunities to showcase their skills in the community or perhaps via a student organization.
