AbilityPath and Via West are hiring Nurse Interns for our camp for children and adults with disabilities!

Nurse Interns provide direct nursing care to campers and staff and respond to any urgent and emergent situations under the direct supervision of the Health Center RN or Health Center Manager; identify potential health risks and implement nursing care plans to reduce those risks

Compensation : $1,300 bi-weekly Pay

Summer Commitment Dates : June 5th, 2025-August 21st 2025

ABOUT THE ROLE :

Provides initial health screening of campers and team members prior to and during their check-in at camp.

Provides direct nursing care to campers and staff : This includes but not limited to assessing and identifying needs, patient reports, first aid treatment, supervised care of patients, support decision making regarding health needs, support campers experiencing mental, emotional and behavioral crisis.

Responds to emergencies according to BLS and Red Cross training, escalates concerns to RNs, Health Center Manager, and activates EMS when appropriate.

Within scope of practice and safety guidelines support clinical assessments, dispensing of medication and other duties.

Assists in care of campers experiencing seizures; identifies need for treatment versus supportive care based on camper's seizure plan.

Follows appropriate medical safety procedures, including : universal and blood-borne pathogen precautions, disposal of medical waste and medications, keeping medications locked up.

Assists with daily medication management, administration, and evaluation using 5 Rights.

Record Keeping : this includes : collection of forms, documentation of assessment, admission, medicine administration and incidents according to ACA standards and state codes and completion of accident / incident reports.

Manages Health Center, supplies, and equipment, including : organizating materials, cleaning and disinfection, inventory check, safety checks, restocking.

Shares night call (2100-0730) with other RNs and Interns.

Supports the mental, emotional, and community health of the camp through collaborative risk management, targeted education, screening and active listening, appropriate referrals and advocating to Health Center Manager.

Works with counselors to identify campers needing extra support, who may not have resources to communicate their needs. Acts as a buddy counselor for those campers when needed.

Supports counselors by assisting with ADLs in lodges, participating in camp activities such as swimming, sports, crafts, hiking, and providing first aid when needed.

Informs Health Center Manager of health conditions of campers and team members on a regularly scheduled basis.

Acts as a Mandated Reporter; responsible for reporting any known or suspected adult / child abuse.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE :

Minimum experience and qualifications :

At least 18 years of age (required)

Pursuing a degree or education in the Health Sector

Must have completed at least one direct patient care clinical rotation and be competent to give oral medications as delegated. (Required)

Current AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certification

Other desirable experience and qualifications :

Able to understand and follow instructions and accept mentorship from RNs; able to follow the nursing delegation process appropriately.

Able to analyze problems, communicate essential facts to relevant parties, collaborate, and think critically in both routine and emergency situations.

Willing to learn from and adapt to the needs and communication preferences of campers and staff with various disabilities

HIRING REQUIREMENTS :

Valid California Driver's License / ID

Clean Driving Record (if applicable)

Proof of negative TB test results

Proof of TDAP

Verification of physical clearance

Passing a criminal fingerprint clearance

18 years of age or job permit clearance

Verification of eligibility to work in the US

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY :

Ability to lift 40 pounds and to assist with transfers from bed to wheelchair etc.

Ability to read prescriptions and health exams from practitioners.

Ability to sit, stand, stoop, and bend frequently; ability to participate in camp activities.
