Middle School Science Teacher

JOB DESCRIPTION: La Academia’s Science Teacher will play an essential role the in the growth and development of our students and our new Middle School Science program. The Science Teacher will nurture in each student a love of exploring and understanding important concepts in science, including problem-solving and how to gather evidence to support ideas or decisions in alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The Science Teacher will model and engage in La Academia’s equity minded practices and other mission aligned values.

REPORTS TO: Director of Middle School

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Teach Middle School Science classes in alignment with the NGSS

· Differentiate instruction effectively to meet the needs of all students (English Learners, Students with Disabilities, as well as Students who are Below and Above grade level)

· Drive outstanding student achievement and engaged learning through creative lesson plans and organized classroom procedures

· Building a classroom culture in which student love science and take pleasure in discovering diverse strategies to solve science problems

· Provide for the care and safety of student under the teacher’s supervision

· Provide for the proper care, maintenance, and reasonable security of all school property in the science classroom/lab

· Organize and oversee the middle school science fair

· Serve as a Middle School advisor for a small group of students, lead advisory curriculum and communicate with families as needed

· Lead extracurricular activities/clubs as needed

· Develop creative, rigorous lesson plans following the grade level scope/sequence and pacing guides

· Provide differentiated instruction and required accommodations in the classrooms so students are challenged and supported according to their needs

· Through formative and summative assessments, evaluate all students regularly and communicate with families of student progress

· Provide continual assessments and accurate tracking of student progress, maintains student work records, and completes assigned paperwork in provided time frames

· Conduct both student and teacher lead parent conferences

· Build strong, positive relationships and work collaboratively with a diverse community of students and their families as well as colleagues

· Complete all required training, goal setting, and other areas of compliance related to professional evaluations

· Prepare lesson plans, seating charts, and classroom procedures for substitute teachers

· Utilize school required platforms as required to perform duties

· Perform other classroom responsibilities and all other duties as assigned and/or stated in our Employee Handbook

· Demonstrate passion to work with Middle Schoolers through a student-centered, whole child approach

· Prioritize life-long learning and be driven to improve their instructional practice to continue their professional and personal development as an educator

· Take a Responsive Classroom approach to classroom behavior and promote restorative practices among students as a community member

· Partner constructively with all staff and parents to fulfill our school mission

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must hold or be eligible to obtain a valid Delaware License and Middle Level Science Certification in required area in accordance with 14 Del. C. § 1543

· Successful completion of Praxis II exams

· 1-2 years of teaching experience at the middle school level with a master’s degree in Science or Technical Education or an education related degree in the science field

· Additional qualifications and/or alternatives as deemed necessary by the Board of Education and School Administration

· Must be able to stand and work continuously for a minimum of 4 hours per workday

· Minimum lifting requirements- 50 pounds (with assistance)

· Must be able to use arms and hands without restrictions to accommodate the physical, mobility, and ambulatory needs of students continuously for a minimum of 4 hours per workday

SALARY & BENEFITS: This is a Full-Time 10-Month position. Salary range are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Health, Dental and Vision benefits are included.
