Job Description
A Distribution Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, and managing electrical distribution systems that deliver electricity to homes, businesses, and industries. They play a crucial role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient distribution of electrical power.
Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and optimize electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground lines, substations, transformers, and other components, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Perform load flow analysis, fault analysis, and voltage drop calculations to assess the capacity and performance of the distribution network, identifying and mitigating potential issues.
- Maintain accurate records of distribution equipment, perform condition assessments, and recommend maintenance, repair, or replacement of aging or damaged assets.
- Specify and select distribution equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and protective devices, considering factors like voltage levels and load requirements.
- Ensure distribution system designs meet safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry codes, collaborating with regulatory authorities for approvals and compliance.
- Identify opportunities to enhance the reliability of the distribution system, reduce downtime, and improve power quality, implementing strategies for system resilience.
- Evaluate requests for new electrical connections, assess their impact on the distribution network, and design the necessary infrastructure to support new customers.
- Manage distribution infrastructure projects from conception to completion, coordinating with construction crews, contractors, and vendors to ensure project timelines and budgets are met.
- Respond to emergency situations, such as power outages or equipment failures, by conducting rapid assessments and developing solutions to restore power.
- Analyze data from monitoring systems, smart grids, and sensors to gain insights into distribution system performance and make data-driven decisions.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in distribution system design, power distribution, and power delivery.
- Experience in distribution planning, distribution power systems, and both overhead and underground systems.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and other computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
- Proficiency in power system simulation software.
- In-depth knowledge of electrical distribution principles, grid operation, protection systems, and equipment.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
- Project management skills to effectively plan, execute, and oversee distribution infrastructure projects.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies, industry trends, and changing energy demands.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field is typically required. A master's degree may be preferred for more specialized roles.
- Many Distribution Engineers are required to hold a professional engineering license (PE) or similar certifications, which vary by region.
- Familiarity with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) may be beneficial.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $45.00/hr.
