Job Title: Formulation Technician
Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Formulation Technician who will be responsible for conducting quality control duties and assisting with bench chemistry work. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with the Technical Director, making lab batches with R&D and testing new materials. You will play a vital role in maintaining high-quality standards and contributing to the development of new products.
Responsibilities
- Approve incoming materials by confirming specifications, conducting visual and measurement tests, and rejecting and returning unacceptable materials.
- Approve in-process production by confirming required specifications, conducting visual and measurement tests, and communicating required adjustments to the production supervisor.
- Approve all finished products by confirming specifications and conducting required tests.
- Return products for re-work if needed and complete documentation to confirm re-work.
- Document and update inspection results by completing reports and logs.
- Keep measurement equipment operating by following operating instructions and calling for repairs.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Assist the Technical Director with bench work, including making lab batches and test batches to evaluate new materials.
- Make test batches based on solids, weight per gallon (wpg), and color(s), considering different application methods, pigment, resin, and rheology.
Essential Skills
- Experience in formulation with solvent-based and water-based coatings, including scaling up from 1 quart to gallon.
- Color matching experience and familiarity with using a spectrophotometer.
- Quality control experience with coatings, including basic analytical testing like viscosity, solids, color, pH, and weight per gallon.
- Hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, especially with solvent-borne materials.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain and teach methodologies.
- Understanding of manufacturing methods and procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in quality control, research & development, bench chemistry, coatings, laboratory work, color matching, chemistry, quality control, spectrophotometry, solvent, water-based coatings, pH, gloss, color, scale-up, pilot plant, R&D, chemical raw materials, wet chemistry, and compounding.
Work Environment
The work environment includes a laboratory setting with occasional visits to the production floor to pull lab samples. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
