Job Description

The histology specialist will be responsible for preparing tissue samples for microscopic analysis.

Responsibilities

• Receiving and sorting specimens: Logging and prioritizing specimens from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases
• Embedding: Surrounding tissue with paraffin wax to prepare for cutting
• Cutting: Using a microtome or cryostat to cut thin slices of tissue
• Mounting: Placing the tissue on a slide
• Staining: Using dyes to emphasize abnormalities
• Maintaining equipment: Performing preventative and corrective maintenance on laboratory instruments
• Quality control: Ensuring the quality of the tissue samples and the accuracy of the results
• Following hospital and laboratory safety standards
• Data entry: Entering patient information, orders, and other data into the laboratory information system
• Communication: Coordinating with physicians and other staff to ensure the workflow runs smoothly

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in a science-related field is a plus
• 2-4 years of histology experience
• HT/HTL ASCP certification or completion of Histology Technician training course and eligibility to sit for the exam is required
• Certification required within 1 year of hire

Work Environment

This position is based in an office/lab environment. The work involves handling laboratory equipment and following safety standards. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00
