Job Description
The Quality Assurance Technician performs quality assurance inspections and laboratory analyses required to meet USDA, Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point Program (HACCP), Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs), and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). This position requires inspection of facilities, raw materials, products, and microbiological and chemical analyses of meats with the ability to halt production should product integrity be at stake.
Responsibilities
- Inspect and analyze meat raw materials and finished products using physical, chemical, and microbiological methods.
- Perform preoperational and operational plant inspections of the entire facility, inside and outside.
- Monitor incoming and outgoing shipments of product.
- Inspect incoming loads of raw material and outgoing shipments of product for conformance to specifications and refer deviations to supervisory personnel.
- Check the condition of incoming raw material and packaging supply trucks.
- Ensure strict adherence to Quality Assurance Guidelines to maintain product wholesomeness.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization within the quality assurance laboratories, keeping supplies readily available for production workers.
- Determine blend size, collect samples, and analyze blends for fat percentage.
- Document information in accordance with plant programs (HACCP, SSOPs, and GMPs).
- Comply with incident reporting policies and procedures.
- Adhere to plant’s security and safety policies and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with customers and all levels of the organization in a professional manner, displaying a positive demeanor and being responsive to the team’s needs.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma.
- AS or BS in Science or 1-3 years of laboratory experience, preferably in the food industry.
- Functional knowledge and experience using laboratory grinder, food processor, and other equipment.
- Knowledge of proper procedures for handling chemicals and laboratory safety procedures.
- Familiarity with USDA regulations and directives, the meat plant’s HACCP, SSOP, GMP, and SOP programs preferred.
- Good basic math skills and the ability to write clearly and legibly.
- Adequate knowledge of safe lifting procedures, “lock out/tag out” procedures, and proper safety procedures.
- Proficient in computer use with knowledge of Microsoft Word, E-mail, and Excel.
- Good interpersonal skills, verbal communication skills, teamwork abilities, and the ability to receive and follow detailed instructions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in laboratory, food science, manufacturing, and lab environments.
- Knowledge in HACCP, FDA regulations, quality assurance, quality control, food quality, and food manufacturing.
Work Environment
50% of the work is in the lab and 50% on the production floor. The production floor is 45 degrees Fahrenheit in a meat processing plant. Jewelry is not permitted. The work environment involves daily exposure to noise, heat, cold, fumes, smoke, cleaners, and other elements. Safety gear including safety glasses and other types provided by the company must be worn. The role requires frequent periods of standing and walking, occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and lifting up to 20 lbs. unassisted. You must be able to work well with co-workers in close physical environments, and respond professionally to inquiries, comments, and concerns.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $23.26 - $23.26
