ActUp Theater is hiring a Set Contractor to design and construct the set for our upcoming, Once on this Island. This role will play a central role in management and supporting the work of ActUp Theater. The Set Contractor will be responsible for conceptualizing and creating the set design for our upcoming production. Duties include collaborating with the director, researching architectural details, providing cost and time estimates, and ensuring all sets meet safety standards. Additional duties include creating samples and sketches for the design, and coordinating the design, rental, and construction of the set.
Responsibilities
- 1-2 years of set design experience
- Experience with creating versatile set designs
- Experience in set design management and acquisition
- Experience in the arts, both as a performer and/or production assistant (set design)
- Demonstrated creative ability in theater set development
- Experience with establishing creative, reusable set designs for multiple scenes/ productions
- Strong portfolio of previous work
- Strong research and interpretation skills
- Good knowledge of design principles, techniques, and translation styles
- Detailed knowledge of carpentry and construction
- The ability to design and construct multi-use set structures for a variety of scenes
- The ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
- Strong attention to detail and collaboration skills
- Ability to select lighting, furniture, wall and floor coverings, and all other props used on set
- Ability to produce models for the director’s approval and implement changes as required
- Ability to provide cost estimates and negotiate with vendors to secure the best deals
- Ability to inspect stage entrances and exits to ensure the set is positioned correctly, and also performing quality assurance on all aspects of the set
- Ability to brief crew and actors on set safety and also explain how the set operates
- Ability to work independently and take initiative to execute a creative set design under a limited budget
- Ability to coordinate and prioritize a demanding schedule and a diverse portfolio of responsibilities
- Ability to coordinate with the costume, prop, make-up, lighting, and camera crews to confirm set details
- Ability to delegate tasks, develop time schedules, and order required materials for the set
- Excellent analytical, organization, problem solving, and communication skills, both orally and in writing
- Strong interpersonal skills as well as a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and interact effectively with students, faculty members, parents, and administrators
- Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of participants from diverse backgrounds
- Have a passion for the arts
- Bachelor’s degree Theater Design, Interior Design, Architecture or related field
- Familiarity with student-initiated arts activities and programs
- Experience with and understanding of activities, programs, and productions of ActUp Theater
- Communicate with the team for all needs to accomplish the assigned task
- Attend all staff meetings
- Additional assignments at a supervisor's request
