What are the responsibilities and job description for the Systems Engineer - Mainframe position at Acuity Insurance?
Acuity is seeking a Systems Engineer focused on Mainframe to research, organize, implement, control and maintain hardware, software and network sub-systems and components per project assignment. The systems engineer will design interface routines to enhance systems software, improve overall performance and to provide transparent functions to the users.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ability to install, configure, and support the z/OS operating system.
- Provide hardware support and maintenance on Z-Series equipment including CPU, storage, and data replication systems.
- Ability to install, configure, and support IBM Middleware such as CICS, MQ, and Db2.
- Ability to install, configure, and support third party applications as necessary.
- Production of clear and concise documentation surrounding complex systems.
- Experience with disaster recovery planning and testing.
- Provide support for application developers’ JCL and COBOL and mainframe applications.
- Provide security administration utilizing RACF.
- Exercise critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address issues as they arise.
- Test new software products and releases as well as hardware devices.
- Assist in establishing standards and trouble reporting procedures.
- Assist in system performance monitoring, reporting and tuning.

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Computer Science, MIS or equivalent and continued field specific education.
EXPERIENCE:
3-5 years practical experience in computer operations, applications and/or technical support or information security.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- A keen interest and aptitude for problem identification and resolution.
- Full understanding of operating system hardware, software, network components, security, and/or database management system.
- Ability to provide exact audit trials and recovery points during project life cycles to ensure maximum system stability.
- Ability to work cooperatively with technical and non-technical system users and industry vendors.
- Good listening ability as well as the ability to competently train others.
- Willingness to respond to problems with little notice as well as to adjusting off hours scheduling to meet company project installation dates.
- Depending on job responsibilities, may be required to reside within a 1-hour radius of the Acuity corporate headquarters.
- Be accountable and respond when reached out to for assistance during and outside of typical work hours, this may include participating in an off-hour call list.
