What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Maintenance Technician – Detention Facility-160612, 165548 position at Adams County?

The Department has elected to consider a range of experience for this vacancy. A candidates' qualifications will determine the level at which they are hired. 

Building Maintenance Tech I:  Perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and alteration of County facilities, including basic plumbing, basic electrical, basic knowledge of HVAC and painting. 

Building Maintenance Tech II: Perform a variety of skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and alteration of County facilities, including basic plumbing, basic electrical, basic knowledge of HVAC and painting. 

Building Maintenance Tech III: Perform, plan, and coordinate a variety of highly skilled work in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of County facilities including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, HVAC, and painting at a Journeyman level.   

Building Maintenance Tech I - Pay Range as of 2025: $22.69 – $31.77

Building Maintenance Tech II - Pay Range as of 2025: $25.50 – $35.70 

Building Maintenance Tech III - Pay Range as of 2025: $28.65 – $40.11

Building Maintenance Tech I - III

  • Maintain and repair County facilities and equipment including but not limited to, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical.
  • Install, adjust, repair, and inspect HVAC equipment including forced air furnaces, boiler, water pumps, chillers, , exhaust fans, and air filters.
  • Repair and replace plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets and pipes as well as clear obstructions from lines.
  • Perform carpentry work including but not limited to the repair of cabinets, partitions, walls, windows, and doors.
  • Assist with improvement projects, as assigned, to improve operations and facility conditions.
  • Troubleshoot, adjust and repair doors and door locking mechanisms.  Issue keys and maintain key issuing logs.
  • Inspect County facilities to identify building maintenance needs and safety issues.
  • Install, maintain and repair a variety of floor coverings such as carpeting, tile, linoleum, and wood.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair a variety of mechanical tools and equipment such as power saws, power sanders, drills, air compressors, sewer augers, and various hand tools required for basic electrical, basic plumbing, and maintenance work.
  • Trim, edge, weed, water, mow, and perform ground maintenance duties 
  • Read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Perform snow removal duties.
  • Repair, replace and maintain electrical lighting systems and fixtures.
  • Partner and interface with vendors and contractors to complete advanced repairs and inspections including but not limited to elevators & fire suppression systems.
  • Assist with furniture moves, assembly and repairs as necessary.
  • Respond to and resolve facility related inquiries
  • Respond to emergency facility related situations both during and after business hours.
  • Comply with industry regulations, including but not limited to, conveyance, electrical, fire code and building code.
  • Monitor and maintain preventive maintenance records and logs.
  • May perform custodial duties when necessary.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

 

 

Building Maintenance Tech I: 

  • Safe work practices.
  • Basic knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment used in building maintenance service activities.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing.
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC 
  • Ability to perform a full range of semi-skilled building maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to identify building maintenance needs and take corrective actions.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Computer skills: Knowledge of basic computer programs - work order programs, MS Office and JDE experience are highly desirable.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Building Maintenance Tech II: 
  • Safe work practices
  • Intermediate knowledge of methods, practices and equipment used in building maintenance services.
  • Intermediate knowledge of electricity.
  • Intermediate knowledge of plumbing.
  • Intermediate knowledge of HVAC.
  • Ability to perform a full range of skilled building maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate a variety of hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to identify building maintenance needs and take corrective action.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Computer skills: Proficient with basic computer and work order programs – MS Office and JDE experience are highly desirable
  • Ability to draw, read, and interpret sketches, diagrams, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
 
Building Maintenance Tech III
  • Safe work practices
  • Advanced knowledge of methods, practices and equipment used in building maintenance services.
  • Advanced knowledge of electricity.
  • Advanced knowledge of plumbing.
  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC systems.
  • Ability to perform a full range of highly skilled building maintenance and repair work.
  • Advanced knowledge and highly skilled ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of codes and industry regulations, including but not limited to conveyance regulations, fire code & building code.
  • Ability to identify building maintenance needs and take corrective action.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision 
  • Computer Skills: Proficient with computer programs and work order systems including, but not limited to: MS Office and JDE.
  • Advanced ability to draw, read, and interpret sketches, diagrams, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Ability to pull construction permits for the various projects as necessary.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Building Maintenance Tech I: 
  • Experience: At least one (1) year of experience executing a full range of general maintenance, including basic electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
  • Education & Training: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. 
  • License and/or Certificates: Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License with no restrictions.
  • Background Check: 
    • Must pass a criminal background check
    • Background check will also include a Motor Vehicle check
    • Some candidates may be required to pass an intensive background process through the Adams County Sheriff's Office, dependent on the facility at which their work is to be performed. 
Building Maintenance Tech II: 
  • Experience: 
    • Two (2) years of experience in the full range of building maintenance and/or construction, including electrical, plumbing and HVAC. 
    • Equivalent years of experience and training will be considered.
  • Education & Training: 
    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. 
    • Additional specialized technical training in building maintenance is preferred.
  • License and/or Certificates: Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License with no restrictions.
  • Background Check: 
    • Must pass a criminal background check.  
    • Background check will include a Motor Vehicle check
    • Some candidates may be required to pass an intensive background process through the Adams County Sheriff's Office, dependent on the facility at which their work is to be performed. 
Building Maintenance Tech III:
  • Experience: 
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the full range of building maintenance and/or construction including electrical, plumbing, HVAC and has the ability and certifications to perform work at a Journeyman's level or above..
    • Equivalent years of experience and training will be considered
  • Education & Training: 
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
    • Additional specialized technical training and certification in building maintenance or a trade license is required. 
      • Some examples of specialized technical training and licenses may include, but are not limited to: 
        • Contractor Class A License
        • Licensed Electrician
        • Certified Water Operator
    • Continuing education credits are required by the department and/or per trade licensing requirements
  • License and/or Certificate: 
    • Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License with no restrictions is required.
  • Background Check: 
    • Must pass a criminal background check.
    • Background check will include a Motor Vehicle Check
    • Some candidates may be required to pass an intensive background process through the Adams County Sheriff's Office, dependent on the facility at which their work is to be performed. 

 

Physical Requirements - All Levels:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to cold, heat, extreme noise, outdoors, confining workspace, electrical hazards, vibration, chemicals and dust, toxic waste, mechanical hazards, explosive materials
