What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy County Attorney position at Adams County?
Essential Job Functions:
- Work with law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes and determine whether charges should be filed.
- Prosecuting cases in court on behalf of the state.
- Providing legal advice to law enforcement and local government agencies.
- Prioritizing working with victims and witnesses to ensure their rights are protected and they are supported throughout the process.
- Meeting with defense attorneys to negotiate plea agreements within the guidelines of the office.
- Presenting the government’s case against the accused from beginning to end.
- Arranging for and presenting exhibits as required to present the case before the court.
- Introducing and interviewing witnesses to present evidence that the accused is guilty.
- Perform legal research consisting of study of Constitution, statutes, decisions, regulations and ordinances
- Writing and arguing pretrial and appellate motions, writing briefs and memoranda for assigned cases.
- Playing an active role in jury selection.
- Appealing cases to a higher court.
- Appearing at and making recommendations at sentencing hearings.
- Answering questions from law enforcement and handling coroner matters while on-call.
- Assist the County Attorney in planning, implementing and reviewing the office’s short and long-term goals.
- Exemplify the desired culture and philosophy of the office.
- Work effectively as a team member with other staff of the office.
- All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate in Law
- Admission to the State Bar of Nebraska
- Preferred although not required experience as an attorney or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Must reside within Adams County, Nebraska, or within 20 minutes of Hastings, Nebraska
Physical Demands:
- Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment
- Stamina to remain seated but to attend and participate in court hearings and meetings out of the office when necessary
- Strength to lift and carry up to 20 pounds
- Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen
- Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone
Working Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to indoor conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
