About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced, organized, and motivated VP Fusion Island Engineering to lead technical engineering and operations. This position will lead an interdisciplinary team to integrate numerous first-of-a-kind technologies while developing scalable processes and procedures. The VP Fusion Island Engineering will be responsible for managing requirements, integration, and interfaces for one of the most consequential and cutting-edge technologies of our generation - fusion energy.

This is a challenging position that requires a high degree of autonomy, and the ideal candidate must be able to move quickly. A proven track record of leading systems engineering, excellent communication skills, and a passion for new technologies and innovation is required.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a team of engineers and scientists to deliver first of a kind fusion technology project
  • Work with leadership to ensure that their integrated stellarator prototype fulfills its mission and aligns with stakeholder requirements
  • Drive strategic initiatives and tactical actions that deliver results to improve program cost and schedule performance. Ensure program milestones and performance goals are achieved
  • Interface the system design with other areas of the including R&D, project management, procurement, finance & operations, etc.
  • Plan and execute a design that proceeds at risk with incomplete information
  • Collaborate with R&D teams to transfer know-how and tools developed

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field or higher
  • 10 years of relevant experience
  • Proven experience integrating large industrial and / or first-of-a-kind R&D projects (e.g. power plants, manufacturing facilities, particle accelerators, etc.)
  • Built and led teams of engineers in complex, interdisciplinary projects
  • Experience across mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems
  • Experience with cryogenic, heating, fluid, vacuum, power electronics, and control systems
  • Ability to build, test, troubleshoot, and scale complex mechanical and electrical systems
  • Leadership of engineering, technical, and scientific teams
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to innovate, execute, and flourish in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional work ethic
  • Prioritization of safety above all else
  • Ability to wear many different hats

    Preferred Experience

  • Prior early-stage startup experience
  • Experience with magnetic confinement fusion, aerospace, or other highly technical industries
  • Logistical Requirements

    This position requires consistent on-site work in Kearny, NJ (NYC metro). This is not a remote position.
