JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for optimal functioning and administration of the Medical Department of Adelbrook Academies and Hilltop program. Responsible for implementing professional nursing procedures and for promotion, restoration, and maintenance of maximum health care and health management of all individuals in care. Ensures for the overall plan of care for all individuals through the assignment of LPNs as appropriate. Provides appropriate assessments and examinations to individuals under the guidance of the Consulting Pediatrician and other licensed practitioners. Provides training for individuals and staff on relevant medical issues. Administratively Supervises and evaluates the performance of the LPNs in the schools and CRS programs. This is a full time exempt position that reports administratively to the Director of Nursing.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensures the assignment and professional supervision of staff in order to fulfill requirements for assessments, planning, implementation and evaluation of each youth in care.
- Assists the Director of Nursing to ensure the training of staff in the provision of emergency care; requests for consultation; and/or immediate referral to the appropriate level of care and the necessity of completing required elements of communication.
- Obtains orders for and interpreting of any test necessary to complete a medical evaluation. This includes blood counts, serum chemistry tests, electrocardiograms, and various radiology procedures.
- For uncommon or unstable medical or psychiatric conditions, assists the Director of Nursing by participating in the diagnosis in consultation with the consulting pediatrician and/or consulting psychiatrist and either refers the individual to a specialist or participates in the dual management and treatment with the consulting physician and/or consulting psychiatrist.
- Assists the Director of Nursing to ensure the administration medications and controlled drugs as prescribed by the consulting pediatrician and/or psychiatrist and in accordance with state of Connecticut standards. Maintains records of all medications and controlled drugs given and ensures the security of those medications.
- Renders emergency first aid and needed medical interventions; assess psychiatric emergencies when clinical staff are not present; when necessary, arrange transportation to emergency room or psychiatric hospital. Orders and interpret routine lab tests when required.
- Ensures regular eye exams and initial and follow-up dental exams for all individuals.
- Assists the Director of Nursing to ensure that all agency Medical Policies and Procedures are current and meet State and Federal regulations and COA and DCF licensing standards. Assures for the reporting and review of any medication errors.
- Assists the Director of Nursing to ensure the maintenance of records noting specific incidents where nursing and medical attention was given to a specific individual, including emergency room visits, reports of physicals given by the consulting pediatrician and treatment rendered for specific physical complaints.
- Assists the Director of Nursing to ensure training for all employees, including Universal Precautions, Blood Borne Pathogens, use of Epi Pens and inhalers.
- Assists the Director of Nursing to ensure the professional supervision of medication administration for unlicensed, Medication Certified staff and LPNs.
- Ensures the medical instruction as part of sex education and other relevant medical issues, as appropriate, to staff and individuals, in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Distributes first aid supplies to the Academies and provides instruction in first aid techniques to appropriate staff as needed.
- Maintains inventory of medical supplies; medications; order/purchase supplies as needed.
- Oversees provision of transportation of individuals for medical appointments.
- Communicates with relevant Treatment Services and Learning Center employees regarding physiological and mental health status of individuals. Participates in rounds, and interdisciplinary meetings as needed.\
- Ensures cooperation of the Department with Treatment Services personnel to facilitate intake, home pass and discharge of individuals.
- Trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates the performance of the LPNs.
- Provides for adequate nursing coverage to meet department/agency needs.
- Assists the Director of Nursing to liaison with various medical providers, including but not limited to pediatricians, psychiatrists, pharmacists, other physicians and contractual services.
- Notifies parents/guardians about medical issues in keeping with agency policies and procedures.
- Observes/documents physical restraints to ensure safety of individuals and staff members.
- Participates in the on-call rotation schedule along with the Director of Nursing and the other Supervisors of Nursing.
- Displays exemplary role modeling on the job and when in contact with the youth in care.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have graduated from an accredited nursing program and be licensed in the State of CT as an RN. Experience in psychiatric nursing and/or work with emotionally disturbed, behaviorally disordered children is preferred. A minimum of five years of nursing experience and additional supervisory experience and training are required.
Must have knowledge of and ability to apply professional nursing theory, practice and ethics; knowledge of current medications, their actions, interactions, uses and side effects; knowledge of medical, therapeutic and psychiatric nursing interventions and methods; interpersonal skills, ability to respond to emergencies; ability to analyze and evaluate proper care and treatment; ability to listen and provide empathetic assistance to individuals and guardians in meeting their needs and carrying out prescribed treatment; knowledge of and ability to apply quality standards, procedures and protocols; ability to encourage and facilitate cooperation, pride, trust and team identity to foster commitment and team work.
The ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, is requisite as is the ability to work with colleagues and individuals from diverse ethnic, educational, economic and religious backgrounds
