Job Purpose:
The Attendance Improvement Specialist is responsible for enforcing attendance policies and reducing student absenteeism in Dalton Public Schools. This role works closely with students, families, school administrators, and community agencies to ensure compliance with state and local attendance laws. This position investigates truancy cases, implements intervention strategies, and provides support services to promote regular school attendance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review daily attendance records to identify patterns of chronic absenteeism and truancy
- Conduct home visits, interviews, and meetings with students and families to determine reasons for absenteeism and develop solutions
- Collaborate with school counselors, social workers, and administrators to implement intervention strategies, including attendance contracts, mentoring, and referral to support services
- Conduct monthly checks verifying withdrawal documents and codes are accurate for students who are withdrawn with any of the following withdrawal codes: Out-of-Country, Out of State, Unknown, and R-Removed for lack Attendance
- Ensure that the school district complies with state and local truancy laws. Prepare and submit reports, issue warnings, and file truancy petitions when necessary
- Educate parents/guardians on attendance requirements, assist families with removing barriers to educational goals, and connect them with community resources
- Work with local law enforcement, juvenile courts, and child welfare agencies to address severe cases of truancy
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance cases, interventions, and outcomes. Submit reports to school administrators and district officials as required
- Assist in developing and implementing attendance improvement programs and initiatives within schools
- Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field
- Prior experience in education, law enforcement, social work, or youth services is beneficial.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work with diverse student populations and families
- Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of state attendance laws and school district policies
- Proficiency in maintaining detailed records and documentation
- Valid driver’s license required.

This position works 210 days.
