Position Title: Academic Support Specialist/Tutor Coordinator for Academic Services (75% Grant-Funded and 25% College-Funded)
Full-time; 10-month appointment; Monday – Friday, some evening and weekend work required
Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Academic Services, the primary focus of this position is to provide students with academic support in the form of tutoring and supplemental instruction.
Essential Functions:
Tutor Coordinator
- Coordinate all aspects of the peer tutoring and supplemental instruction programs
- Hire and train appropriate tutors
- Maintain adequate, up-to-date records and list of current tutors for each specified subject area
- Assign tutors for students and verify services received
- Manage payroll of tutors.
- Coordinate with Math Lab and Writing Center Directors.
Academic Support Specialist
- Plan and implement educational and cultural events for Excel members with approval of the director.
- Order tickets and arrange for group admission
- Reserve and provide transportation
- Provide report of each event that includes all receipts and a summary of the event’s educational value that links it to grant objectives
- Serve the needs of a caseload of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), “TRIO EXCEL,” participants, acting as a professional mentor, which includes accurate and complete records of the services provided to EXCEL participants, including contacts.
- Assist in EXCEL program review, design, and evaluation.
Other Duties
- Participate in departmental and staff meetings.
- Participate and assist in college functions and events hosted by our office.
- Make changes and additions to duties as deemed necessary by the director.
- Serve as Advisor to the Peer Active Leaders (PALs) program for Commuter and Non- athletes at Adrian College.
- Work in collaboration with Campus Safety to ensure the Caine Cupboard is actively stocked and monitored.
- Accept other duties as assigned by the director.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises Tutors and Keep Payroll Records.
Work Environment: This job operates primarily in an office environment, at a desk, with the use of standard office equipment including computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets, fax machines.
Physical Demands: Some lifting, bending, and standing may be required.
Work Hours: The Academic Support Specialist/Tutor Coordinator is a full time, 10-month position. Work Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30-5, with some evening and weekend hours required. Leave time off will be used during June and July.
Travel: Position requires accompanying student to off-campus events/conference and may also include travel for professional development.
Required Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree with experience in an educational setting. Experience using and updating databases and keeping accurate data. Knowledge of best practices regarding academic support strategies. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to establish strong mentoring connections with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Preferred Education and Experience: A master’s degree in counseling, student affairs, or education preferred; experience with secondary or post-secondary teaching/counseling. A person of a background similar to that of students served by the Excel grant program is preferred.
