Job Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Weld Production Supervisor that is results-oriented with a keen focus on quality and efficiency to join our team at our manufacturing facility in Lawrenceburg TN. As a Weld Production Supervisor, you will be responsible for leading a crew of welders and material handlers in our welding department. You will be required to setup and execute the welding of steel racks in the safest and most efficient manner while minimizing quality issues. Success in this position relies on effective planning, coaching, problem-solving, and follow-up.
Reports To: Production Manager
Responsibilities:
· Safety First: Always adhere to safety protocols, ensuring employees are using proper PPE and that tools are in good working condition.
· Team Leadership: Lead daily shift meetings to review Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost performance.
· Training & Development: Monitor, engage with, and provide feedback on individual training to ensure effectiveness.
· Quality Assurance: Maintain an “eye for quality” throughout the day. Perform spot checks. Identify potential issues such as poor welds, missing welds, non-square conditions, missing components, dimensional tolerances, etc. Take corrective action – feedback, root cause problem solving, and coaching.
· Error Proofing: Implement strategies such as color-coding fixtures, monitoring part placement, and sequence of weld to prevent errors.
· Production Support: Assist with initial part setup and manage product flow to meet production schedules and customer demands.
· Labor Allocation: Assign tasks based on operator strengths and skill levels. Meets production schedule in accordance with the Production Planner and scheduling commitments from planning meetings and directives.
· Overtime Management: Secures overtime, if required, to support the production and delivery schedule.
· Efficiency Optimization: Oversee weld cell setup and layout (material and fixtures) to maximize workflow and minimize idle time. Monitor and motivate the crew as necessary to minimize idle time, unnecessary movements, and improper technique. Ensure efficiency of forklift drivers – minimize excessive travel and wait times for weld operators when supplying/removing parts and/or fixtures.
· Performance Tracking: Use the Production Tracker to monitor performance, review calculated efficiency, and provide coaching as needed.
· Equipment & Material Support: Ensure the team has the tools/equipment they need to perform optimally. Perform minor repairs to welding equipment as required.
· Documentation: Keep records of tardiness, absenteeism, policy violations, and other attendance issues, communicating these to the Production Manager.
· Communication: Actively collaborate with the Production Manager and other departments to resolve issues and update production status. Attend and report out in Whiteboard meetings on critical items.
· End-of-Shift Duties: Ensure that shift clean-up is completed, and all equipment is ready for the next shift.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Production Manager.
Required Skills:
· Proven leadership experience in a production or manufacturing environment.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Competency in basic arithmetic and tape measure reading.
· Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
· Knowledge of MIG welding techniques and equipment.
· Understanding of workflow optimization and waste reduction.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· High school diploma or equivalent.
Desired Skills
· Previous leadership experience in a metal fabrication environment.
· Problem solving experience: from problem definition to containment to root cause identification to permanent corrective action.
· Knowledge of 5-S workplace organization principles.
· Grasps the notion of tolerance stack-up’s.
· Understanding of labor capacity planning.
· Forklift certification is a plus.
· Experience in MIG welding within a production environment.
· Familiarity with MIG welding machine setup (leads, feed roll pressure).
