Position Summary: The Principal Technical Engineer interacts with commercial leadership, R&D, and operations to identify improvements and expansions to existing product lines. The Principal Technical Engineer provides process technology support to operating plants, the Capital work process including process engineering design, capital project development, construction, and commissioning, and the development of new products and processes that will sustain and grow the business.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Become an expert on the process chemistry, operating philosophy, and the process design basis for operational assets.
Work within teams to identify and implement longer term process improvement efforts, with the overall goal being to achieve improved safety, higher yields, better production rates, and higher attainment.
Identify and implement improvements on basic control schemes and advanced process control strategies.
Develop process economics, feasibility studies, and project justification analyses.
Assist plant operations in key growth, cost savings, or operational stability projects.
Ensure quality assurance of engineering calculations, process simulations, and engineering drawings.
Assist in development of strategic and long-term focus for assigned area to encompass planning for projects into annual budgeting and longer-term strategic planning processes.
Interface with Supply Chain, Quality Control, DCS, commercial leadership and other groups as necessary to ensure continuous improvement and seamless delivery of customer needs.
Leading Process Hazard Analysis/HAZOP activities
Supporting capital project engineers through detailed design, equipment purchases, construction, and startup
Drive effective use of OSHA-PSM elements including Process Hazards Analysis, Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Review, and Standard Operating Procedures
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering
15 years of experience in process, production, and/or manufacturing engineering within the chemical, petroleum, and/or polymer industrial manufacturing environments
5 years of experience in Ammonia and/or Nitrogen based fertilizer plants, or related manufacturing processes.
Additional Qualifications:
Six Sigma Black Belt, Lean Manufacturing or Green Belt certification a plus
5 years of experience in Ammonia and/or Nitrogen based fertilizer plants, or related manufacturing processes.
Experience in the fundamentals of process simulation, design and operation for a broad range of unit operations including reaction, distillation, refrigeration, fired heaters, heat exchange, various utility systems (air, nitrogen), steam boilers, water distribution systems as well as their successful commissioning and start-up.
Experienced in the integration of environmental permit compliance limits within process design and plant operations.
Experience with Front-End-Loading (FEL) and stage gate project development for major capital projects.
Proficient in Aspen Plus, PipeFlo, Minitab, Excel, Process release modeling (Safer, Phast), and process trending software.
Experience in Process Safety Management covered processes.
Familiarity with DCS programs such as Experion, Foxboro, or DeltaV
Must be self-motivated and goal-oriented with proven success working independently and in a multi-functional team environment.
Excellent organizational, planning, and verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.
