Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE) is a nonprofit law firm established over 50 years ago to ensure that the most vulnerable people in our communities have the same access to justice as people and companies that can afford to retain an attorney. ABLE and its partner law firm, Legal Aid of Western Ohio (LAWO), are the only law firms available for comprehensive legal representation in non-criminal matters for more than 425,000 people living, working, and raising their families in poverty in Northwest and West Central Ohio. ABLE advocates for and with financially disadvantaged individuals and communities to effectuate just and equitable policy changes that address the structural causes of poverty and to protect their right to fairness and justice in the legal system.
Job Summary:
The Staff Attorney supports the Medical-Legal Partnership for Children (MLPC) practice group, providing comprehensive legal assistance to families of pediatric patients. This role requires collaboration with healthcare providers, community organizations, and ABLE staff to address diverse legal issues impacting low-income families.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties as assigned):
- Deliver high-quality legal assistance to eligible clients through advice, negotiation, litigation, administrative representation, and community education.
- Identify and address recurring legal issues impacting client communities through community collaborations, litigation, negotiation, and education.
- Develop expertise in substantive laws relevant to assigned practice groups and carry out effective advocacy.
- Build strong relationships with healthcare providers, community organizations, and other stakeholders to advocate for legal needs affecting children's health.
- Engage in policy and legislative advocacy to address systemic issues impacting the health and well-being of children and families.
- Maintain a manageable caseload, focusing on cases with broad community impact.
- Supervise assigned paralegals, law clerks, interns, and volunteers, ensuring quality legal support.
- Complete administrative tasks, including timekeeping, case management, and reporting, in compliance with internal guidelines and funding requirements.
- Support ABLE’s fundraising and public relations initiatives as needed.
- Travel as necessary for job duties, including occasional overnight trips
SCOPE & IMPACT:
The Staff Attorney will contribute to ABLE's mission by addressing systemic legal issues affecting low-income families, enhancing community health outcomes through legal advocacy, and promoting equity and justice.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Licensed attorney admitted to the Ohio Bar or eligible for admission by motion or passage of the next bar examination.
- Minimum of two years of legal experience in poverty law, public interest advocacy, or related fields preferred.
- Strong commitment to advocacy for low-income populations and ABLE’s mission.
- Proven dependability, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in diverse environments.
- Excellent legal skills, including writing, analytical, and oral advocacy abilities.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications and strong administrative skills.
- Valid driver's license and auto insurance required.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience in civil rights litigation, trial advocacy, child advocacy, housing law, government benefits, or special education.
- Familiarity with community lawyering and experience working with diverse communities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· May supervise paralegals or legal assistants as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· Work is performed in a normal office environment
· Must hold a valid driver's license and be insurable.
COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND WORK LOCATION:
ABLE is committed to providing an equitable work environment, including a commitment to pay equity. The annual salary range for this position starts at $68,000.00. ABLE offers comprehensive fringe benefits, including health insurance, annual leave, sick leave, supplemental language compensation, loan repayment assistance for attorneys through the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation and paid parental leave. This position can be based out of Toledo, with hybrid work possible.
