Job Overview:
As an FPI NDT Inspector Trainee, you will learn to perform non-destructive testing (NDT) using the Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) method under the guidance of experienced inspectors. This hands-on training role will involve learning and mastering key inspection techniques, including equipment operation, part preparation, defect identification, and documentation. The goal is to gain proficiency and work towards full FPI NDT Inspector Certification.
Key Responsibilities:
- Basic FPI Inspection Procedures: Learn and follow the proper procedures for cleaning, applying penetrant and developer, and conducting post-cleaning for FPI inspections according to established industry standards.
- Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain FPI inspection equipment (e.g., spray guns, developer tanks, inspection lights) while under the supervision of experienced inspectors.
- Part Preparation: Clean and prepare parts for inspection, removing contaminants that may interfere with the FPI process, ensuring the highest level of inspection accuracy.
- Defect Identification: Under guidance, identify and interpret surface flaws and discontinuities revealed by the FPI method, developing your ability to detect defects.
- Documentation & Reporting: Accurately record inspection results, including defect location, size, and nature, using required forms and reports.
- Quality Control: Follow established procedures and quality standards, ensuring inspections are conducted in accordance with specifications. Report discrepancies or issues to senior inspectors.
- On-the-Job Training: Receive hands-on training and mentorship from experienced FPI inspectors to hone your skills and gain in-depth knowledge of the inspection process.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Technical Aptitude: A strong mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of materials and manufacturing processes. Familiarity with aerospace materials is a plus.
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional visual acuity and the ability to identify even minute defects that may impact product quality and safety.
- Instruction Following: Ability to adhere strictly to established procedures, guidelines, and quality standards.
- Basic Computer Skills: Familiarity with data entry and basic computer applications for reporting purposes.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and work in confined spaces as required for the inspection process.
- Manufacturing/Production Experience: Experience in a manufacturing or production environment is a plus but not required.
