WIC Shopping Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY: The WIC shopping assistant shall be available to support new and current WIC participants, authorized representatives, alternate representatives and proxies who express difficulties shopping for WIC foods, using the WIC card or utilizing the WIC Shopper app.

Position Qualification Requirements

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency.

Experience: General knowledge of the WIC participant population and authorized Missouri WIC retailers in the LA service area and

• One (1) year experience in public health.
• One (1) year counseling and customer service experience desired.
  
  

Skills and Abilities which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position:

• Skill in planning and organizing work assignments.
• Demonstration of rapport-building skills by establishing and maintaining effective working relations with WIC participants, WIC team members and other health and social services personnel.
• Some knowledge of nutrients of WIC eligible foods
• Knowledge of the benefits of breastfeeding and understanding of how to support the breastfeeding mother.
• Some knowledge of adult learning principles, stages of change and basic counseling methods.
• Some knowledge of social, cultural and economic problems and their impact on public health concerns.
• Some knowledge of the general organization and function of public health agencies.
• Effective use of educational materials when providing education and counseling.
• Skill in basic computer fundamentals and literacy

Essential Functions

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

• Accompany the participant, authorized representative, alternate representative or proxy to their choice of retailer.
• Assist in locating and identifying WIC-approved foods at the retailer.
• Promote utilization of the WIC Shopper app and WIC card.
• Explain the WIC Shopper app features while in the store to assist participants, authorized representatives, alternate representatives or proxies in obtaining full redemption of all WIC benefits.
• Assist with WIC transactions while at the register to ensure understanding of WIC card usage.
• Document each WIC shopping assistant session in the Management Information System (MIS).
• Promote group and individual shopping sessions by making flyers, calling or texting participants, and posting on social media sites.
• Follow up with each WIC participant, authorized representative, alternate representative or proxy within 30 days after utilization of the WIC shopping assistant's services.
