Position Summary
This position reports directly to the Farm Manager of the ADS Eatonton Beef Research Unit and the Senior Farm Manager in the Animal and Dairy Science Department ( ADS ) and ultimately to the Head of ADS .
The principal duties of the position include, but are not limited to, 1) providing day-to-day support of research, under the direction of the Farm Manager of the operation, of a beef research farm of approximately 1,500 acres, 2) direct involvement in all aspects of daily care of beef cattle, including feeding, breeding, calving, forage management, herd health, feedlot management, etc., 3) working with faculty and other farm staff to ensure that the research, teaching, and extension missions are accomplished, 4) performing all tasks related to fencing, making facility improvements and repairs, and other tasks are requested.

Duties/Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities
Research involvement; assist faculty, research technicians, and students in the collection of research samples and data. This may include feeding, weighing, and assisting with all aspects of herd health protocols and procedures.
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Farm Manager and Sr Farm Manager, involved in all phases of work performed for maintaining a large beef herd (approximately 500 cows) including pasture management, forage production and harvesting, fencing. This includes maintenance and operation of equipment necessary for farm operations including tractors, field implements, and feeding equipment.
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Nutrition; daily feeding; assist in the management, planting, cultivation and harvesting of forages. Operation of feedlot facilities involving finishing steers and heifers in a humane and environmentally responsible manner. This may include cleaning pens, working with C-Lock feeders.
Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities
Herd Health; day-to-day care and observation of livestock; maintaining up to date health records; maintenance of routine vaccination deworming and health programs.
Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities
Breeding program; assist in all aspects of the breeding program, including working with faculty, veterinarians, or graduate students performing artificial insemination and embryo transfer; assist in breeding soundness exams and management of bulls.
Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities
Calving; provide assistance to cows when necessary; process calves; provide treatment and care for calves. After the grant project is finished (approximately 3 years).

- Knowledge of livestock management practices and agronomic practices for growing and harvesting crops required for the feeding of beef cattle.
- Knowledge of machinery operation and maintenance.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work activities involved in a beef farm operation and those involved in field research work.
- Ability to implement and conduct research field trials under the direction of faculty, graduate students, post-docs, and the Farm Manager.
- Ability to maintain the necessary research and beef management records as specified by faculty, graduate students, post-docs, and the Farm Manager.
