What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Technician (Mechanic) position at Agency for Community Transit?
Description
The primary function of the Mechanic is to perform safe and cost-effective maintenance and repair of all equipment owned and or / operated by ACT / MCT. Furthermore, the position supports ACT's purpose and objectives by respecting and adhering to all policies and procedures of the Agency.
Essential Functions includes but are not limited to :
- Performs preventative maintenance to vehicle fleet as scheduled by shop foreman.
- Performs scheduled and non-scheduled repairs and system overhauls at the journeyman level as directed.
- Conducts diagnostics and repairs of all systems associated with the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle fleet. This includes heavy duty, light duty transit buses, sedans, minivans, large passenger vans, and equipment ranging from agricultural tractors to small engine items.
- Notifies supervisor of repairs or problems requiring additional or unusual maintenance work.
- Completes emergency "on-road" diagnosis and repair of fleet as necessary.
- Shifts buses into service quickly and safely as needed.
- Records all work completed and / or in progress into the computerized maintenance system.
- Provides drivers with technical assistance via the 2-way radio system.
- Stays current on required certifications and driveline systems.
- Drives buses to and from emissions and safety inspection testing facilities for mandated testing.
- Stays current on latest practices as applicable to the Agency's needs including proper safety practices.
- Keeps his / her workplace clean and safe.
- Be aware of the potential safety and security factors throughout the transit facility and to follow all applicable policies and procedures of the Agency. Responsible to report any known or potential safety and / or security factor immediately to an appropriate supervisor, including any employee not following the policies and / or safety procedures.
- Attends work regularly.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Normal working conditions for this position are typical of a ventilated automotive garage environment. The position is exposed to high noise levels, oil, grease, cleaning agents, fuels, fumes, and all types of weather conditions. Capacity to work beyond standard hours when needed to address maintenance needs.
Physical requirements of the position include full range of motion in all extremities. Possess the ability to lift and maneuver objects weighing up to 70 pounds (e.g., a bus tire). Must be able to walk at least one mile and work standing, bending, and stooping. Position may require performing tasks while laying flat on back or while arms are lifted above head. Must be able to pass Department of Transportation physical exam and drug screen.
