Summary:
Deseret Ranches is seeking a detail-oriented Agronomy Manager to provide consultation and technical services in the areas of pasture development and renovation, water management, pest control, nutrient management and ensure assets are optimized in pursuit of achieving division and company-wide goals.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure high quality pastures for grazing cattle that promote high body condition scores in mature cattle and strong average daily gain for calves, balancing bulk, energy, and protein requirements.
- Advise cattle leaders in the development of individual crop plans and on-going pasture management for their units.
- Develop crop plans and budgets for agronomic inputs that serve as the basis for scheduling and quantifying inputs and treatments as well as forecasting associated costs.
- Recommend agronomic practices and coordinate the efforts of outside PCA’s, labs, consultants, and farm advisors to provide ranch management with clear, planned, effective and cost-efficient advice and information.
- Provide insight into production opportunities by analyzing yield and quality results, scouting information, and application timing and rates of ag chemicals, fertilizer, and irrigation.
- Troubleshoot, study, record, and report on findings that occur in the various pastures.
- Strategically purchase agronomic resources (chemicals, equipment, labor, etc.) leveraging business relationships to ensure on-time supply while minimizing costs.
- Organize all trials to make sure they are applicable and in the best interest of the ranch.
- Provide an agronomic point of view to team efforts to continuously improve employee, food, and environmental safety processes.
- Mentor, train and develop an Agronomy team.
- Champion a world-class safety culture through on-going training, effective preventative maintenance programs, positive promotions, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory agencies and local policies.
Qualifications:
- 8 years of relatable work experience with 3 years progressive leadership experience with through understanding of soils, chemistry, plant physiology, and statistics.
- Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Plant Science, Agribusiness or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience managing safety, operation, and maintenance of crop-production and pasture maintenance equipment such as tractors, sprayers, mowers, etc.
- Strong understanding of pasture requirements, production practices, and typical pests and weeds.
- Certified crop advisor (CCA).
- Current PAL (Private Applicators License) or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
- Proficient computer skills with competency in Microsoft tools and ability to learn other software/systems.
- Understanding the use and implementation of GPS equipment.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, and business partnership skills. Bilingual Spanish helpful.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role which includes leaning over, squatting, standing and lifting up to 75lbs and push/pull/dragging up to 200lbs.
- In addition to the regular farm schedule, willing and able to work long hours (55-75hrs per week) seasonally and in outside weather conditions which includes inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, and high winds.)
