The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. We are currently seeking a Vice President, Advocacy & Grassroots for our Washington, DC office. This position is a hybrid role (three days in the office, two days working remote).
Starting base salary = $221,000 - $276,000 a year (commensurate with related experience).
The Vice President, Advocacy and Grassroots reports to the Senior Vice President, Federal Relations and is responsible for the operational oversight of the legislative and grassroots activities of the Federal Relations division. This position involves balancing an array of high visibility responsibilities under continuous time and performance measures.
This position is responsible for representing and directing AHA's interests in advocacy and grassroots issues and assumes a leadership role in legislation affecting hospitals. This includes developing, advocating and articulating AHA's position to achieve a positive impact on the legislative environment facing members.
- Provide strategic leadership for daily operational and legislative activities of the lobbying and grassroots team, Federal Relations. Develop and maintain working relationships with members of Congress and congressional staff.
- Play a leadership role in developing AHA strategies and articulating AHA policies on assigned congressional committees.
- Draft AHA documents for advocacy and representation on issues under consideration on assigned congressional committees.
- Maintain effective communications with AHA members, including developing AHA member briefings. Serve as member liaison for specific groups of members or a region of the country.
- Present to internal and external audiences on federal advocacy and legislative activities. Travel to state associations, hospitals and health systems, and conferences to represent AHA and provide federal updates. Provide other advocacy or legislative activities, as needed.
- Oversee grassroots advocacy efforts for the association, including overseeing the AHA lobbyists. Collaborate with AHA field engagement and regional executive colleagues to coordinate and launch grassroots campaigns to engage members and drive congressional involvement.
- Performs other duties as assigned by manager.

Experience
Preferred- 12 - 15 years: Minimum 12 years political, substantive, legislative, and trade associate experience, including political experience as staff to a member of Congress and a background with a trade association involved in health care issues. Requires a background in legislative representation, thorough knowledge of health care issues, outstanding writing and speaking skills, willingness to travel, and the ability to work well with people in a conciliatory manner in a high-pressure environment.
Education
Preferred- Masters or better in Political Science or related field
