Summary
The Land and Natural Resources Manager will be responsible for the team that manages, monitors, and responsibly develops Ahtna’s land and natural resources. This requires the ability to work on projects and to support team members as they study sensitive habitats, establish infrastructure to restore degraded resources, develop land and natural resources policies, and guidance, monitor, take inventory of wildlife and other resources, develop material sites, carbon projects, supervise the development of and/or develop forestry plans, ANCSA land conveyances, and monitor and comment on State/Federal Fish and Game proposals in the Ahtna Region. The Land and Natural Resource Manager will play a role in many projects in the Ahtna Land Department. This is a leadership role and will entail assisting/overseeing the land and natural resources team members in their project goals that serve to achieve the Ahtna Land Department mission to protect, preserve, and responsibly develop Ahtna-owned lands for future generations of Ahtna’s people.
This position is located in Glennallen, AK. The salary range for this position is $111,481-$139,351/year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Effectively delegate tasks to appropriate personnel to achieve Land Department goals
- Plans, monitors, and reviews job results
- Implements and enforces systems, policies, and procedures
- Maintains safe and healthy work environment by establishing and enforcing organization standards and adhering to legal regulations
- Develop ecosystem, renewable energy and cultural projects within the scope of Ahtna principles, including preparing and adhering to budgetary constraints.
- Deliver technical reports and contract administration required upon and during project completion in a timely manner
- Assist in building relationships with outside entities by networking
- Assist in creating an environment in the Ahtna Land Department that establishes trust and cohesiveness in the work space
- Play an integral role in completing projects in the Land Department that serve the mission of responsible development of Ahtna owned lands
- Monitor Ahtna owned lands and assess potential needs, development, protection, improvements, safety concerns on Ahtna owned lands
- Provide technical assistance on multiple ongoing projects in the Land Department
- Identify areas of improvement and take the necessary steps to complete the goals
- Work with federal, state, and local agencies on contrasting viewpoints
- Take inventory and monitor health of wildlife populations in the Ahtna Region
- Conduct fieldwork and gain familiarity with Ahtna owned lands
- Requires familiarity with or ability to learn to use tools to include handheld GPS units, drones, chainsaw, compass and a variety of hand tools as needed
- Capable of working with team members in remote environments with no direct supervision
- Assists in the meeting of production targets and quality targets
- Assists in navigating using GPS, downloading of data to computer, operation of digital data recorders, and technical measuring devices
- Load, off-load and secure ATV, boat, snow machine to a trailer or pick-up bed
- Operate ATV’s, snowmachines, boats safely to achieve project goals
- Excellent communication skills and ability to relay information in a respectful manner both internally and externally.
- Monitor and comment on State/Federal Fish and Game proposals that affect the Ahtna Region
- Work in partnership with AITRC
- Written reports on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis.
- Other duties as assigned
Supervision
- Lead and supervise 3-6 Ahtna Land Department staff
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, forestry, natural resource sciences or related field
- Experience may be substituted for education on a 1:1 basis
- Six years of project field experience directly related to wildlife, forestry, cadastral surveying, cultural resource identification, fire management
- Experience being a team leader and overseeing projects
- Ability to work more than 8 hours a day per seasonal work demands or meetings with Ahtna entities, tribal councils, or other work meetings.
- Ability to pass a firearms safety course within four months of hire
- Ability to pass a bear guard safety course within four months of hire
- Ability to pass a wilderness first aid course within four months of hire
- Knowledge of firearms and firearm safety and the ability to obtain shotgun certification, or recertification within four months of hire
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Valid Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Land, Natural Resource, Wildlife Biology
- 2-3 years field work within the Copper River Valley
- Field First Aid training
- Certified Bear Guard
- Certified Firearm Safety

Physical Demands
Work performed outdoors will include exposure to extreme weather conditions. It will also include field data collection by car, truck, ATV, boat, and/or aircraft. Ability to load, off-load and secure ATV and boat to trailer, or pick-up bed for safe transport. Forms of transportation can be bumpy and can cause whole-body vibrations, jarring, and/or awkward movements. Ability to walk long distances, up to 8 miles daily while carrying materials up to 45 lbs.

Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described in this job description are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this job.
Exposure to extreme weather conditions and rough terrain. Walking, hiking, bending, lifting, sitting, and squatting outdoors for extended periods of time. Will require training to work in areas where dangerous wildlife may exist. Employees must provide their own waterproof footwear. Ahtna will provide all other safety gear including rain gear.
Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, or as business needs dictate
