Summary
The Natural Resource Technician (NRT) I, II or III position is ideally suited for motivated individuals possessing a strong work ethic and enjoy working both independently and as a team member in the fields of forestry, wildlife, natural resources, and other related disciplines. NRT’s assist with development and administration of forestry practices, wildlife enhancement and other land department projects that work to monitor the health of Ahtna owned lands and those adjacent. The NRT will be based out of the Glennallen, AK office and subsequent project assignments will be determined as applicable.
The NRT is employed by the Land and Resources Department while assisting multiple natural resource partners in the management, improvement, and protection of Ahtna lands.
The NRT is required to carry a firearm for protection from wildlife; therefore, the NRT must successfully complete a certified firearms training course which can be provided by Ahtna Inc. upon appointment to the position.
Please Note: This is a full-time, temporary seasonal position. This position is located in Glennallen, AK. The pay range for this position is $24.04-$28.73/hour.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Understanding of silvicultural systems, timber cruising, sampling techniques and timber volume estimations and/or;
- Understanding of natural resource management practices, survey, and inventory methods primarily on moose, soil, aquatic, and forestry projects
- Maintain integrity of samples collected for specific projects assigned to by Ahtna and Ahtna Intertribal Resource Commission (AITRC)
- Safely execute a vast array of job responsibilities that reach the goal of respectful and responsible development of Ahtna lands
- Able to proficiently use Global Positioning System (GPS) during field use
- Able to navigate difficult geographical terrain and associated elements in remote locations in east-central Alaska under potential extreme climatic conditions
- Understands wilderness survival skills, possesses a general knowledge of cold weather operations for equipment and personnel
- Be a local knowledge resource to Ahtna shareholders, Ahtna villages, and the Land and Resource Department in the Ahtna Region
- Ability to safely operate an ATVs including loading, unloading and backing trailers
- Must be flexible in work hours, including availability for extended workdays and possible overtime
- Maintains current training and certifications required for the position
- Successfully pass any onboarding trainings required upon hire
- File and submit weekly reports to designated supervisor

Minimum Qualifications
Natural Resources Technician I
- Associate degree (or extensive field experience) in Forestry, Wildlife, Natural Resources or related fields, or combination of work experience and education.
- Experience may be substituted for education on a 1:1 basis.
- A minimum of one (1) year of progressively responsible work experience that demonstrates ability to meet core competency requirements.
- Driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Certification in firearms training or ability to obtain certification within two (2) months of hire.
- Minimum age: 18
Preferred Qualification
- Requires strong capabilities in Geographic Information System (GIS) data entry, integration and manipulation and proficiency in ESRI products such as ArcGIS Pro.

Physical Demands
Frequent sitting, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, and seeing (up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus); walking; bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for up to 4 hours; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work performed in a professional office setting utilizing telephone, computer, and other office equipment.
Work performed outdoors will include exposure to extreme weather conditions and requires strenuous hiking over arduous terrain and carrying a backpack up to 50 pounds. It will also include field data collection by car, truck, ATV, boat, snow machine, and/or airplane. Forms of transportation can be bumpy and can cause whole-body vibrations, jarring, and/or awkward movements.

Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described in this job description are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this job. The employee will be working in and out of doors and will be subject to wilderness conditions, confined spaces, changes in temperature, weather conditions and noise levels.
Work Schedule: 40 hours per week and occasional overtime
