What are the responsibilities and job description for the Actuarial Analyst position at AIPSO?

AIPSO is a management organization and service provider for various insurance industry groups responsible for administering the residual market. We are a national organization that serves local customer needs. Centralization and standardization are key to many AIPSO services because of the inherent economies of scale and other efficiencies. However, our organization is based on customer focus and recognizes the need for flexibility in serving customer groups with diverse interests.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop actuarial analyses, with a focus on reserving, in accordance with Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) principles.
  • Assist in the preparation of special actuarial research and other reports.
  • Conduct a cursory reasonability review of work products and relay any concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Participate in the peer review of department work products.
  • Develop exhibits to support rate and reserving products.
  • Pursuit of CAS Fellowship Credentials.
  • Assist Team Leader with subsequent technical negotiations with regulatory authorities on rate proposals.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of computer files.
  • Participate in development of loss reserve studies.
  • Assist in the preparation of rate level proposals for governing committee presentation.
  • Participate in the development of written documents for distribution to Plan Managers,

Insurance Department staff and other internal AIPSO staff.

  • Research emerging trends, competitive conditions, and operational changes.

Education:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) majoring in mathematics, statistics, or related field from a four-year college or university. Additional appropriate experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Passing of 2 to 5 actuarial exams.

Experience:
3 or more years of related insurance experience preferred. Experience using databases, spreadsheets, statistical software, and computer languages to compile and categorize data.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office productivity tools (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel) to manage work. Strong spreadsheet and technical skills to use databases and pivot tables.
  • Effective problem-solving skills, including ability to analyze issues, find the root cause of the problem, and consider a wide range of alternatives before acting.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups or individuals.
  • Ability to multi-task and demonstrate flexibility while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and interact professionally and effectively in a team environment.
  • Mathematical skill and reasoning ability to validate data, ensuring accuracy presented in reports and exhibits.
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry and related regulations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to on-going insurance education.
