Job Description:


Air Sciences is looking for a full-time staff member to provide technical support and direct the work of a field crew in the operation and maintenance of an environmental monitoring network in the Owens Valley, CA.


About the job:


Air Sciences has supported dust mitigation and monitoring at Owens Lake for almost 20 years. As part of these efforts, an extensive network of instrumentation is used to record and transmit data in real-time. This position will be directly involved in the operation and maintenance of this monitoring network and also work closely with the full-time field crew based at Owens Lake to coordinate work tasks to meet client needs.


A successful candidate will become familiar with the dust mitigation efforts and regulatory requirements of the Owens Lake Dust Mitigation Program. The candidate will become the technical lead for the monitoring, communications and data systems, and will direct and support installation, maintenance and troubleshooting in coordination with the Project Manager. This position will also be involved with the reporting and quality assurance of monitoring data. Data reporting may involve creating Word documents or graphical summaries with Excel and interfacing with web-based data storage programs. Data quality assurance may involve compiling or reviewing performance reports, reviewing real-time data, or comparing data to local EPA-approved monitors.


Candidate must be disciplined, self-motivated, safety-conscious, and possess adequate verbal and written interpersonal communication skills. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license. Candidate must be willing to work unsupervised in rugged conditions with frequent exposure to harsh conditions including extreme temperatures. Exposure to hazardous environments (e.g., dust) is possible. Safety training and protective equipment will be provided by the employer.


The Air Sciences office for this position is located in Portland, Oregon, but remote candidates based in southern California may be considered. The job will include travel to Owens Valley, CA, on an as-needed basis. This is a full-time, exempt position.


Education:


Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering required, additional education in a relevant field will receive extra consideration.


Desired skills:


  • Familiarity with air quality monitoring instruments and practices
  • Experience with low-voltage power systems, radio telemetry and network communications
  • Experience operating Campbell Scientific dataloggers
  • Solid computer and data analysis skills
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (“drone”) pilot license or ability to obtain
  • Ability to work outdoors in a high desert environment
  • Experience working on or with a team conducting field work and ability to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions to team members


Compensation:


Base salary of $80,000 - $110,000 depending on relevant experience.
