The Airbus US Space Systems engineering team, located in Houston, TX, is developing next generation external payload hosting solutions for commercial and government Low Earth Orbit applications. Our team is small and agile, with each person filling multifaceted roles. We have a flat organization structure, encouraging cross collaboration and providing ample opportunities to learn and grow in areas of interest.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative engineer to support hardware development, systems engineering and overall program support. Looking for self-reliance with capabilities to support immediately in electrical engineering aspects, integration, test and overall system functionality of related space hardware as applicable. Being at the cutting edge of space technology, we need someone who is eager to advance the team, grow, and take on new and potentially unfamiliar challenges.

Position Summary

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer's primary responsibility will be in the development, integration and support toward the development of space rated avionics hardware in support of low earth orbit payload hardware, primarily in conjunction with the ISS program. This position will entail a wide range of support from design to final testing of both flight hardware, development and engineering models and supporting capabilities in ground support and testing, inclusive of documentation and development of procedures for electrical component level testing and related support to integrated level test environments.

Position Responsibilities:

Electrical Engineering: 65%

  • Develop procedures, work instructions, and process flows for successful integration, test, and delivery of Avionics sub-components.
  • Generate essential paperwork and documents for tasks assigned, such as Task Performance Sheets (TPS), Discrepancy Reports (DR), as needed.
  • Plan and execute hardware development and troubleshooting procedures and ability to investigate mechanical and electrical failures with hardware as applicable.
  • Coordination with Avionics Subsystem Lead in the development, integration and testing to support the schedule and milestone completion efforts as defined per project.
  • Parts selection and procurement for general fabrication of electrical components and test setup GSE
  • Design, develop, analyze and test electrical devices, circuits, harnesses, and equipment, and electrical systems for spaceflight payload system and experiment hardware.

Integration and Test Engineering: 30%

  • Systematically document progress, capture knowledge, and maintain electrical engineering notebook
  • Support testing of space payloads at a component and integrated test level in electrical and mechanical test environments
  • Perform hands on electrical integration and test tasks.

Additional Responsibilities: 5%

Qualified Experience / Skills / Training:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering/Science-related field, or equivalent experience is required.

Experience:

Required:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years relevant electrical engineering experience
  • Engineering Development, unit testing and flight hardware qualification experience.
  • Experience in data analysis and programming using MATLAB
  • Understanding of C/C coding; Linux; RTOS; device driver programming; experience with hardware/software Integration; TCP/IP, NTP. NASA software and systems development requirements and standards, including NPR 7150 NASA Software Engineering Requirements.
  • Experienced electro-mechanical technician capabilities - hands on capabilities
  • Experience in electrical cable and connector assembly and integration
  • Proficient with electrical test equipment/meters - Oscilloscope/multimeters/logic probes/hipot test (insulation strength/milliohm meter bonding)/power supplies

Preferred:

  • NASA Payloads Development Experience

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Preferred: Crimp, Cable, and Harness Certification per NASA-STD-8739.4 - Electrostatic Discharge ESD Control per GPR 8730.6 - Solder Assemblies per ANSI / J-STD-001 with Space Addendum

Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:

  • Ability to write technical assembly instructions and appropriately document work steps as a technical record

Communication Skills (Spoken, Written, Influencing, Presentation, Proficiency in Other Languages):

  • Excellent listening, comprehension & interpersonal skills as responsible for daily communication via email and phone calls required.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication (verbal/writing), and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from group managers, clients, and customers
  • Ability to clearly communicate ideas with others on design team

Location(s):

  • Significant presence in the Houston (Webster), TX office to work alongside the engineering staff
  • No relocation packages offered

Technical Systems Proficiency:

  • Project and task scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project
  • Microsoft Office Suite

Travel Required:

  • 5 - 10% Domestic & International
  • Infrequent international travel to collaborate with European Airbus counterparts
  • Possibility for on-site support during launch campaigns

Eligibility:

  • US Citizenship is required

Clearance:

  • Able to clear a background check
  • NASA badge or ability to obtain

Nature of Contacts:

  • Moderate Communication on a daily basis with internal and external parties

Physical Requirements:

  • Onsite: 100%
  • Vision: able to see and read computer screen and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents.
  • Hearing: able to hear to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds including safety warnings or alarms.
  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations, deliver information and participate in communications.
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment
  • Carrying: able to carry documents, electronic equipment and/or supplies up to 40lbs/9kg
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, electronic equipment and/or supplies up to 40lbs/9kg.
  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push/pull items in office areas.
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on computer.
  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to occasionally squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items shelved on bottom shelves
  • Standing: able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Walking: able to walk through office and outside areas including uneven surfaces.
