Summary

The Al J. Mueller Superintendent is responsible for managing construction projects on-site including safety, field employees, subcontractors, schedules, and budgets to ensure the successful execution of the project.

Evaluation of Performance

New hires receive a 90-day performance review, otherwise, annual reviews are conducted thereafter. The performance will be evaluated based on meeting specific goals, deadlines, and other quality indicators established for this position, working according to policies and standards established by Al J. Mueller, working effectively in a team environment, and interacting positively with all clients, subcontractors, and employees.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees construction sites including productivity, safety, quality, and Al J. Mueller employees.
  • Orders materials for projects and ensures they are on-site when needed. Issue PO and cost code accordingly.
  • Frequent email communication with subcontractors and suppliers communicating schedule and work in place.
  • Time entry and daily logs.
  • Conduct or delegate Daily Preparation Process (DPP)
  • Update the Field Operations Manager with 2 week look ahead for manpower and equipment.
  • Create and maintain a positive work environment for all project personnel.
  • Responsible to ensure the right subcontractors, equipment, and materials are on-site at the right time.
  • Push subcontractors and suppliers for commitments and hold them accountable as needed.
  • Requests manpower and equipment resources to the appropriate as needed for the project.
  • Ensures positive relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers, and other employees are being maintained.
  • Participates in project-specific meetings before, during, and after the completion of the project.
  • Ensures high levels of communication with Project Managers to understand and meet workload needs.
  • Ensures Company safety policies and procedures are followed.

  • Demonstrates the ability to read, interpret, and use drawings, specifications, sketches, plans, and other visual instructions, either in print or digital form, in order to perform the required work. .
  • Demonstrates ability to read and interpret owner contract provisions and implement as needed during a project.
  • Demonstrates understanding of drafting, engineering, and building techniques and terminology.
  • Able to manage multiple projects including the ability to create, understand, follow, and meet schedules. Able to prioritize, organize tasks and time, and follow up, as well as perform responsibilities efficiently and timely.
  • Able to manage multiple requests and meet multiple deadlines and can direct and monitor others to ensure goals and deadlines are met. Can hold others accountable for performance.
  • Takes initiative and needs no supervision.
  • Familiarity of OSHA and other state and federal regulations regarding safety in the commercial construction industry.
  • Demonstrates familiarity of relevant building codes, whether federation, state or local.
  • Able to effectively supervise and develop employees, including teaching, coaching, and mentoring. Able to guide others toward professional development in the industry.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service orientation.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. Can effectively communicate with a variety of individuals with diverse backgrounds, education, and economic levels and roles both with external and internal others.
  • Able to work well in a team environment.
  • Able to negotiate with and influence others as well as resolve conflicts.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet usage, Outlook (e-mail), Microsoft Teams, and Zoom. Capable of learning company software programs.
  • Basic level of knowledge with project management software.
  • Demonstrates a high level of mechanical ability.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in basic mathematics.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.
  • Must meet Company requirements for minimum OSHA safety training of the position.

Experience, education, degrees, and licenses

  • B.S. degree in a business-related discipline, such as construction management, architecture, engineering, or a related field of study.
  • 5 years’ experience as a commercial Project Superintendent in liew of B.S. degree.
  • Class A CDL Preferred

Physical requirements

  • Must be able to travel to multiple job sites daily.
  • Work may be on a job site requiring walking, bending, stooping, crawling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and climbing stairs.

Work environment

  • Sometimes work is done indoors in an office or outdoors at a construction site.
  • Must be able to work proficiently with computers and other office equipment.
  • Often exposed to sounds and noise levels such as from earth-moving equipment that can be distracting and/or uncomfortable.
  • Wear protective equipment as outlined in the Al J. Mueller Safety Manual and/or owner job site requirements while meeting OSHA standards.
  • Often exposed to hot or cold temperatures, depending on the weather, as well as sawdust and other material dust particles.
  • Are sometimes exposed to hazardous equipment.
  • May work in buildings without heating or air conditioning, such as portable trailers or unfinished structures.
