Overview

The purpose of this position is to provide specialized supervision, guidance, and instruction to camp attendees (trainees) in a team setting. The Crew Trainer will lead or support educational activities on topics such as the history of space, robotics/cyber and aviation programs. They will also lead/support activities in variety of camp-related topics, including, but not limited to, the Mission Center Complex (MCC), Aviation Challenge (AC), Robotics and Cyber Camp Programs, Museum simulators, Space Camp program activities, Ropes Course Facilitator, Logistics/Camp Operations, and/or Airport transport and Extended Duration activities. Crew Trainers are ultimately responsible for ensuring trainees receive a quality, safe, and secure camp experience that reflects the Mission, Vision, and Spirit of the USSRC.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

1. Supervising and Providing Care for Trainees/Participants (All Crew Trainers)

  • Escort and accompany trainees at all times to scheduled activities, maintaining orderly behavior, and a professional learning environment.
  • Attend to any personal difficulties encountered by trainees, such as illness, conflict mediation, loss of personal items, etc.
  • Serve as a positive professional role model for trainees, putting an emphasis on college/education importance, exhibiting professional integrity, and military service.
  • No physical contact with camp attendees allowed unless it is a life-threatening situation.
  • Wake up/Lights out duty, afterhours habitat monitor, meal/cafeteria monitor, logistical and supply preparation, registration/check-out and supporting other employees performing camp activities. Some duties/responsibilities may fall outside of normal operating hours.
  • May conduct High & Low Ropes training and ensure that trainees are adequately instructed in the individual ropes elements and understand their roles in the overall element execution.
  • May serve as a lead in areas with unique requirements and specific job knowledge in USSRC programs based on personal/professional experience.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. The above duties reflect the general responsibilities necessary to describe the principal work functions of the job and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all work requirements that may be in the position.

2. Educating and Instructing Trainees/Participants (Team Leader, Simulation Specialist, and Ropes Course Instructor)

    • Conduct space and unmanned aviation simulations training, and ensure that trainees are adequately instructed in mission simulation positions and understand their roles in the overall mission.
    • Provide knowledgeable explanations about a variety of space, robotics and aviation related subjects and perform lectures and briefings as assigned.
    • Ensure that trainees are adequately instructed in all program contents and activities for a successful and enjoyable experience.
    • Instruct, supervise and perform swimming/water activities.
    • Maintain a clean, organized, safe working environment for both customers and coworkers.
    • Meet or exceed the expectations of the Leadership team for providing customers with a quality and safe simulator and camp experience.
    • Assist in weekly registration, graduation, and coordination of trainees prior to and after completion of their camp program
    • Maintain Leadership Challenge Course equipment and elements in accordance with training and USSRC safety standards.

    3. Coordination of Trainees’ Transportation and Registration (Airport Extended Duration)

      • Ensure transportation arrangements are confirmed through Airport Extended Durations Coordinator and communicated to trainee.
      • Facilitate early trainee departures and late arrivals to the airport. For example running trainee wake up as early as 2am.
      • Operate a company vehicle to shuttle passengers to and from the airport. Must meet USSRC age and license requirements to operate Center Vehicles.
      • Serve as a representative of the USSRC at Huntsville International Airport

        4. Understands and follows all USSRC policies and procedures

        5. Is a positive role model: displays positive attitude, interest, and motivation to work with the trainees, other aerospace team members, and other departments.

        6. Participates in teamwork: effective and productive involvement with all Space & Rocket Center staff

        7. Maintains high standards for work areas and appearance; presents self in a highly professional manner to others.

         

         Physical Requirements of the Position

        • Walking and climbing (stairs, hills, ropes, ladders, poles, and wooded terrain) to access simulators, ropes elements and training areas.
        • Standing for long periods of time (4-6 hrs) or for duration of shift instructing and operating simulators.
        • Carrying and lifting equipment, supplies, and objects up to 50 lbs. waist high.
        • Bending, kneeling and reaching to store & retrieve supplies, and operate simulators, ropes course elements, and camp activities.
        • Seeing/sight, to present lectures and briefings and conduct instructional tours through the museum and other areas of the facility and campus.
        • Talking and hearing to communicate with supervisors, guests, trainees and employees in person and over the telephone. Must be able to clearly and effectively present safety briefings and instructional debriefs.
        • Ability to work in an outdoor environment in hot summer temperatures (should not exceed 105° F heat index).
        • Able to swim/teach in a water environment free from fear and/or anxiety.
        • Must be able to operate astronaut training simulators, aviation/flight simulators and ropes course elements free of fear or anxiety for the safety of our guests.
        • Must be able to work a full shift (day, night, weekend, or overnight) based upon the Center’s needs and the individual’s preference and availability

        Qualifications

        Required Education and Experience

        Age 19 years old

        Education:  Prefer a minimum of 20 hours completed college credit. Life and professional experience may substitute for educational required hours.

        Preferred Education and Experience: Experience working with children in a structured environment (e.g., coaching, tutoring, teaching). Previous experience in a similar educational, instructional camp, space exploration work environment, or military experience a definite plus. Must possess excellent communication and instructional skills and be positive role model. Must exhibit strong leadership skills.

        1. A valid driver’s license and good driving record preferred.
        2. Willingness to comply with our required dress code.
        3. Must pass drug and alcohol screen, clear the State Central Registry on Child Abuse/Neglect upon employment, a criminal background checks and other tests and required by management. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center does not hire convicted felons.

        Specialization Requirements:

        Airport Crew Trainers must be able to obtain a TSA Sterile Area security clearance at Huntsville International Airport and meet USSRC drivers license and age restrictions to operate Center vehicles.
