Position Description:
The Alamo is looking for a part-time Actor-Historian to join our Living History team!
POSITION SCOPE
The Alamo Actor-Historian provides visitors with historical interpretation of the site and its over 300 years of history primarily through a variety of historical theatre productions, interactive theatre and first-person interpretation focusing on the people who have inhabited and/or had an impact on the site. They will assist in the research, writing, production and performance of a wide variety of events ranging from pop-up monologues to fully staged productions. Alamo actor-historians will also assist in the creation and implementation of new programming, inventory maintenance, tours, and other duties as required.
Candidates for the position are required to successfully complete a training program to become knowledgeable and comfortable with the Alamos history, as well as interpretation for visitors.
DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Work with Living History Senior Management to build a creative, cohesive and dynamic Alamo Theatre Company with a focus on visitor engagement.
Perform in multiple theatrical productions simultaneously.
Perform outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
Research, develop and create new material for theatre productions.
Develop presentations of personas based on historical documentation.
Use improvisational tools to engage with visitors.
Dress appropriately in period clothing (19th century provided by the Alamo) daily.
Study and be familiar with the history of the Alamo (training program provided).
Answer visitor questions about the Alamo and life in 18th and 19th century Texas.
Assist in the development and execution of productions and special events.
Assist in daily set-up of demonstrations, productions and programs.
Assist with the day-to-day functioning of the Living History Department.
Assist with interactive demonstrations and activities for visitors of various ages.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma required, college coursework in theatre or history preferred.
Theatre experience required.
Musical/dance experience a plus.
Ability to write/collaborate on theatrical material preferred.
Outgoing personality with ability to speak to the public.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Willingness to do historical research.
Memorization skills are a must.
Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather.
Able to lift 30 pounds.
Audition required as part of the interview process. Prepare one dramatic and one comedic monologue.
