JOB TITLE: Certified Coding Specialist
DEPARTMENT: Business Office
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: This is a nonexempt position. Responsible for coding and posting all billable services by Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute providers. Accurately assign CPT and ICD-10 codes by analyzing and abstracting information from dictated reports to achieve timely billing. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Able to set priorities and manage time in a fast paced, high volume environment, while exercising critical thinking skills. Perform audits as needed. Stay current and updated with coding guidelines and payer regulations. Flexible for overtime and weekend work.
PAY RANGE: $24-38/HR dependent upon experience and education.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to Business Office Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports. Occasional stress from varying demands. Must be able to work independently. Must be able to lift/carry up to 25 pounds.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a busy office environment. Frequent contact with employees, patients, physicians and outside agencies. Occasional evening or weekend work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Education:
Minimum: Some college, preferably with an emphasis on Medical Coding, Medical Terminology and Basic Human Anatomy.
Experience:
Required: Two years of experience in medical office with emphasis on medical coding.
Certificate/License: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required from AAPC

- Clean claim submission for all billable services performed by Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute (AHVI) providers
- Research all information to insure a complete and accurate coding and billing process
- Investigate coding problems and formulates solutions, following current coding and billing guidelines and regulations, payer specific requirements and AHVI policies and processes
- Accurate assignments of CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS codes and modifier, per current coding and billing guidelines and regulations
- Research medical necessity denials and prepare/submit appeals with appropriate paperwork and/or records, in timely manner
