    Summary:

    With minimal supervision, repairs and maintains heavy equipment for Division of Environmental Health and Engineering (DEHE) projects, on remote construction sites throughout the State of Alaska.

    Responsibilities:

    Performs diverse repair tasks, including electrical and mechanical on various models of heavy and light equipment. Operates and safely use diesel engines, hydraulics & pneumatic operating equipment. Repairs and maintains light and heavy equipment at DEHE construction project sites statewide. Supports construction projects to build sanitation facilities in remote Alaska.

    Performs AC/DC stick welding in all positions including the use of oxy-acetylene methods of cutting and welding steel. Operates hand power tools for welding/fabrication processes. Ensures equipment operates efficiently and safely as regulated by OSHA and Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Resolves and repairs equipment failures, and light mechanical issues as directed. Maintains a safe working environment.

    Ensures tools and equipment are shipped to rural work sites.

    Coordinates with project Superintendents and Fleet Equipment Manager for routine and major equipment maintenance and repair.

    Completes daily production reports.

    Performs other duties as assigned or required.

    KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

    · Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and maintenance procedures and processes.

    · Knowledge of repair techniques and requirements for mechanical, electronic, and other diverse equipment systems.

    · Knowledge of safety precautions for operating and repairing motorized vehicles, equipment and tools.

    · Knowledge of equipment software programs and troubleshooting techniques.

    · Knowledge of Arctic weather conditions.

    · Knowledge of Alaska Native Cultures.

    · Skill in analyzing and resolving heavy equipment operation and maintenance problems.

    · Skill in the use of tools, and materials, and equipment used in heavy equipment maintenance

    · Skill in operating power equipment and hand tools.

    · Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers and community project representatives.

    · Skill in operating a personal computer, utilizing a variety of applicable software programs.

    · Skill in tracking and maintaining records.

    · Skill in interpreting equipment systems operating schematics, hydraulics, electrical, cooling and associated diagrams.

    · Skill in ordering parts, tools, and materials to accomplish repairs, with minimal supervision.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

    A High School Diploma or GED.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

    Non-supervisory - Five (5) years’ experience in heavy and light equipment repair and maintenance with working knowledge of welding practices OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

    MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

    Requires a valid Alaska driver’s license with a clean driving record.

    PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

    · Depending on the need of the organization, incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain “A” Alaska CDL licensing and any additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.

    · The ability to obtain certification and additional knowledge in equipment manufacturer specific troubleshooting and maintenance software.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    · May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.

    · May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

    · This position requires frequent exposure to hazardous work environments with heavy machinery, hazardous materials and extreme weather conditions.

    · Requires frequent climbing, bending, stretching, stooping, kneeling and working in cramped positions.

    · Must be able to lift and carry approximately 50 pounds.

    · Requires frequent travel to remote locations by small plane.
