Principal Responsibility: The editor revises lot descriptions and photographs provided by the Cataloging department, before inclusion in the auction catalog.
Position is: Hourly, non-exempt Position Reports to: Chief Editor
Position Supports: Auction Managers, Marketing
The Editor is Responsible For:
- Revising auction lot descriptions and photos to adhere to company standards for accuracy, tone, style, completeness, and fairness in depicting items in their current condition.
- Adding value to lots by emphasizing aspects not readily apparent during the cataloging process, as well as including context or provenance of interest to bidders.
- Alerting the Chief Editor to possibilities for increasing lot value, such as consolidating or splitting lots that contain less or more value than first anticipated, and to possible ethical concerns in the sale of illegal, explicit, objectionable, or unsafe items.
- Alerting the Chief Editor to any high-value or high-interest items within each auction
- Informing the Chief Editor of any errors found during live auctions.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to confidentially process and maintain data with attention to detail.
- Strong administrative and electronic communication skills, and mobility to perform related tasks, including in-person inspection of consigned items when directed.
- Proficient technical writing skills to effectively draft emails, memos, and correspondence for internal and external communication with staff.
- Ability to demonstrate strong computer and typing skills, experience with different software programs as they pertain to office communications, and the ability to learn and use software for auction management and photo editing (single and batch).
- Possesses a good eye for detail, both in writing text and editing photographs per company guidelines.
- Able to prioritize and plan work activities, use time efficiently, plan for additional resources, set goals and objectives, and develop realistic action plans as indicated by the Chief Editor.
- Ability to meet attendance requirements;; arrive at meetings on time; sit for long periods working on a computer screen while operating a keyboard and mouse.
- Ability to maintain a positive, supportive, solution-focused attitude at the workplace, and within a team of contractual editors with varied work schedules and locations.
Minimum Qualifications
- A degree in journalism, communications, or similar is preferred, but not required.
- Previous experience as a text editor.
- Previous experience as a photo editor.
- Excellent research skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Good decision-making skills.
- Ability to communicate in writing, and work as part of a team that includes those from off-site offices.
- Proficiency in MS Office and/or Google Workspace Applications.
- Ability to pass a background and reference check.
