General Definition of Work:
Assumes complete responsibility for the supervision of assigned workers, including the prioritization and scheduling of tasks. Independently performs routine semi-skilled work to repair and maintain school facilities, grounds and associated equipment. Assists in the planning and scheduling of work necessary for the proper maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in order to complete tasks essential to the safety and efficient operation of the school environment. Maintains acceptable attendance in accordance with Albemarle County guidelines and complies with safety standards. This position is designated as “Essential Personnel”, which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies. Maintains access to school buildings during inclement weather conditions including snow removal. |

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of the grounds keeping trade, including the maintenance of athletic fields; ability to supervise other employees; ability to acquire a knowledge of the methods and techniques of a standard trade, within a reasonable time period; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to acquire skill in the use of tools and equipment of a standard trade and perform basic skilled tasks associated with the field assigned. |
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience in one or more of the standard building trades equivalent to high school graduation, with several years of experience relating to grounds keeping and/or athletic field maintenance. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Negative drug screening and tuberculin test required. Possession of a valid Virginia Drivers License, and a valid Virginia Commercial Drivers License, within six months of employment. |
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts: Work may be performed indoors, or in confined spaces; and in outdoor locations, in all types of weather including adverse conditions of snow, rain and extreme temperatures, at extreme heights, or in confined spaces. Performance of more strenuous physical tasks, such as a) walking over rough or uneven surfaces; b) bending or stooping; c) working in confined spaces; d) lifting or carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds. Daily operation of power machinery such as skill saws, drills, table saws, radical arm saw, sanders and miter saws. Exercises installation and setting up of mobile classrooms requiring the use of backhoe or tractor. Also exercises the use of transit is required. Exercises the operation of mowing equipment including gas and diesel mowers, tractors, weed eaters, and chain saws. Participates in the installation of door hardware including door closures, panic devices and lock sets. Possible exposure to potentially disabling/non-disabling injuries by equipment. Regular contact with individuals from: a) other internal organization units; b) outside organizations; and c) the general public for purposes of exchanging factual information which requires some judgment or interpretation in order to be responsive to questions or applicable to a specific situation. Communication is usually cooperative in nature, with most conflicts resolved by higher authority. |
