What are the responsibilities and job description for the SPECIALIST MCKINNEY-VENTO COMMUNITY NAVIGATOR position at Albuquerque Public Schools?
Advocacy with students and families experiencing homelessness to reconnect with educational opportunities and community resources to achieve stability and improve educational outcomes.
An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Support youth experiencing homelessness throughout the District at all grade levels.
- Advise youth of their educational rights under the McKinney-Vento Education Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. §§11431-11435)
- Provide meaningful educational opportunities to children and youth experiencing homelessness
- Identify and remove any barriers to accessing education for children and youth experiencing homeless, to include, but not limited to enrollment and registration, academic and health records, and essential documents
- Advocate and facilitate access to transportation to remain at/ return to school of origin
- Conduct a needs assessment with youth and their family and collaborate to develop an action plan for stability and success in education
- Connect children and youth experiencing homelessness and their families with community resources based on their needs and goals
- Support youth to meet academic standards through structured programming at schools, tutoring, and summer programming
- Facilitate children and youth participation in educational opportunities comparable to services offered to other students in the school to include, but not limited to, services provided under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 6301 et seq.) or similar State or local programs, educational programs for children with disabilities, and educational programs for English learners, programs for career and technical education, for gifted and talented students, and school nutrition programs.
- Connect children and youth experiencing homelessness and their families to shelter and housing resources, community agencies and organizations
- Observe and consult with students and their teachers and educational staff that are requesting additional supports and strategies for students
- Assist educators with developing data based interventions and advocate on behalf of children and youth experiencing homelessness for the best instructional/educational decisions.
- Awareness of McKinney-Vento Education Assistance Act
- Associate’s Degree in Education or related field.
- At least 3 years of experience working directly with children and youth experiencing homelessness
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone.
- Knowledge of word processing, database and spreadsheet software.
- Knowledge of APS community, computer system, financial and legal requirements.
- Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects and coordinate with others and community partners.
- Knowledge of district policies on immunization, and child abuse/neglect.
- Ability to establish rapport with youth and their families and maintain positive relationships with clients, colleagues, supervisors, and the community.
- Ability to follow the goals and objectives in a collaborative action plan.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Three years experience in education, case management, working with children and youth experiencing homelessness and their families.
