Basic Function: Overall goal is to produce turned parts by independently setting up and operating machinery to manufacture parts to customer specifications within company standards for safety, quality and productivity.
Essential Functions:
- Must be able to perform duties and have obtained the knowledge/ skill of Machinist – 1st Operation.
- Review machine layout instructions and set up machine per layout. Discuss and agree upon changes to layout with Supervisor and Engineering as appropriate. Document all changes to machine/tool layout.
- Run production; assure parts meet customer specifications by measuring parts per inspection plan. Enter SPC as required and properly respond to out of control conditions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve machining problems.
- Instruct other employees in use, care and operation of machines as appropriate.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform maintenance on and repair mechanical problems on screw machines as necessary.
- Communicate all necessary information to Management, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, other production departments and follow employees in a professional and courteous manner.
- Complete all paperwork per proper procedures (routing card, tool change logs, count sheets etc.). Properly identify parts and enter production into information system.
- Housekeeping: maintain work area in a neat and orderly manner, keep floors clean and free of oil & chips.
- Perform all safety inspections to equipment daily, use proper machine guards and lifting techniques.
- Follow company policies, procedures and safety rules as described in the Alco Employee Handbook.
Knowledge, skills and ability:
- Ability to perform all the responsibilities of Machinist – 1st Operation.
- Ability to read and understand Blueprints, Inspection Plans and follow instructions.
- Ability to use and interpret all precision measuring gauges including micrometers and calipers, comparators & special gauges.
- Ability to select feeds & speeds, grind and set all tools and to troubleshoot machining problems as necessary.
- Ability to use a computer to enter production & print routing cards, to use, understand & properly respond to SPC results.
- Must be able to work well with others and be able to train machining skills.

- Lifting policy
Education, Training and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to use basic math and understand instructions.
- Minimum of 1-3 years' experience on screw machine operation and set up.
Physical Requirements:
- Heavy work - lift up to 35 lbs. frequently, occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Reach into machine; push/pull to engage machine, move parts.
- Bend, stoop or crouch to clear chips or lift part pans.
- Use fingers & hands to manipulate parts & close visual concentration while inspecting parts.
- Repetitive motion required for loading stock, checking parts.
- May climb during machine repairs.
- Continual standing and walking to perform duties.
