Reports to:  Operations Manager
Location:  Long Beach, CA
Employment Status:  Full-Time

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 0800-1630

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 

Position Summary: Aldevra is currently recruiting a PhD Level, Board Certified, Chief Therapeutic Medical Physicist to support the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Long Beach, CA. To ensure the quality of the Radiation Oncology Physics Program, the designated CTMP will report on-site at least 5 days/week. This position is contingent upon contract award.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

· Provide quarterly Quality Assurance reports for the Quality Assurance and Radiation Safety Committees and attend quarterly Radiation Safety meetings.

· Track, evaluate, and document equipment-related quality assurance data, including TLD and credentialing measurements, for independent third-party analysis.

· Conduct shielding surveys and submit reports as required by regulatory authorities.

· Ensure all licenses for linear accelerator equipment and radiation oncology software applications are current and compliant.

· Maintain continuity of medical physics operations through effective communication among key personnel.

· Develop, implement, and periodically review all Quality Management Program (QMP) policies and procedures related to radiation therapy equipment.

· Oversee technical activities of physicists, dosimetrists, and other staff, ensuring proper execution of treatment procedures.

· Conduct systematic literature reviews and implement newly published radiation therapy techniques and procedures, including developing standard operating procedures and training staff.

· Establish and enforce continuous quality improvement policies and procedures for radiotherapy equipment use.

· Report all adverse events in the Radiotherapy Incident Reporting & Analysis System (RIRAS) and ensure proper follow-up.

· Maintain and update facility profile data for national reporting offices.

· Coordinate electronic submission of incident reports, including adverse events, near misses, and good catches, into RIRAS.

· Justify the use of advanced treatment modalities (e.g., IGRT, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, HDR/LDR brachytherapy) according to professional standards and guidelines.

· Ensure peer review of all treatment plans before initiation of therapy.

· Participate in peer review conferences to assess treatment decisions, goals, and expected outcomes.

· Review and discuss consultations, staging evaluations, and treatment decisions to ensure clinical appropriateness.

· Maintain familiarity with VA tumor site-specific treatment guidelines.

· Ensure accurate patient care documentation, including weekly chart reviews and special physics consultation notes, in compliance with electronic health record policies.

· Adhere to professional practice and performance standards, including NHPP, AAPM, TJC, and other accredited body guidelines.

· Perform additional duties as assigned.

Workplace Safety and Environment:
This position primarily operates in a clinical and office environment, involving computer work, data analysis, equipment evaluations, and collaboration with medical and technical staff. Occasional presence in radiation treatment areas may be required for quality assurance checks, equipment calibration, and procedural oversight, necessitating adherence to radiation safety protocols and workplace safety regulations.

This position requires passing an extensive background check.

Qualifications:

· PhD level required

· Must be board certified in Medical Physics or Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and maintain licensure with the Board of Licensure for Professional Medical Physicists, if applicable.

· Must fulfill ongoing continuing education and certification requirements throughout employment.

· Minimum 5 years of experience after board certification, with at least 3 years of continuous work experience within the last 5 years.

· At least 5 years of experience performing QA procedures.

· Minimum 3 years of experience working in a healthcare system accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) or APEx.

· At least 3 years of experience working with TrueBeam with Brain Lab Accessories, following TG-142 guidelines.

· Minimum 3 years of experience with Cone Beam CT (CBCT), following TG-142 standards.

· At least 3 years of experience with: Eclipse treatment planning system; ARIA record & verify system; Experience must include treatment modalities such as 2D/3D Conformal, SRS, SRT, SBRT, and IMRT/VMAT (following TG-53 standards).

· At least 3 years of experience using MapCheck or an equivalent system for IMRT QA.

· Minimum 3 years of experience with GE Discovery CT Simulator or an equivalent system, following TG-66 guidelines.

· At least 3 years of experience using Superficial X-ray Machines.

· Successfully performed at least one acceptance test on a linear accelerator (worked with the vendor to ensure proper function during installation).

· Successfully performed at least one commissioning of a linear accelerator (gathered necessary measurements/data for a treatment planning system).

· In-depth knowledge of radiation oncology care, including professional standards, principles, and procedures.

· Understanding of growth and development as well as pathophysiology of disease processes related to radiation oncology patients.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent telephone etiquette and precise documentation.

· Proficiency in Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office (intermediate to advanced level), online calendars, and cloud-based systems.

· Detail-oriented with accurate data entry skills.

· Customer-focused with a team-oriented work ethic.

· Ability to multi-task efficiently and accurately while maintaining quality standards.

· Must provide proof of required immunizations.

· Valid driver’s license required.
