What are the responsibilities and job description for the Founding Backend Engineer - Rust position at Alexander Chapman?
We’re hiring a founding back-end engineer to join a small, technical team working in person in NYC. This role is ideal for someone excited about building infrastructure from the ground up—starting with a blazing-fast model gateway and expanding into intelligent optimization systems for LLMs. You'll be one of the first contributors, helping shape the core architecture and capabilities of the platform.
The focus is on building reliable, low-latency systems that power real-time inference, experimentation, and learning loops for large language models. Think routing, logging, A/B testing, adaptive strategies, and inference-time optimizations—all with an emphasis on clean, maintainable code and real performance.
They’re especially looking for someone with a strong background in Rust, as the model gateway and other core systems are built in it. Experience writing production-grade Rust is required.
You’ll have full ownership over major technical areas and the flexibility to dive into new challenges as the platform evolves. Most of your work will be open-source, and the team is highly collaborative with a deep engineering culture.
Bonus Points For:
- Expertise in Rust and systems programming
- Experience leading infrastructure-heavy projects end to end
- Contributions to open-source infrastructure or developer tools
- Excitement about joining a fast-moving team at the earliest stages
This is a full-time, in-person role based in NYC. The team offers competitive compensation, meaningful equity, and the chance to help define a new open-source standard for LLM infrastructure—backed by long-term investors and strong technical leadership
