What are the responsibilities and job description for the Afterschool STEM Instructor position at Alfond Youth and Community Center?
POSITION SUMMARY:
The AYCC is looking for someone who is passionate about teaching kids about the wonders of biology! As an Afterschool STEM Instructor, you would create a space in our Discovery classroom that sparks a sense of creativity and an interest in learning about the intricacies of life science. In our classroom, our kids have made butter, cared for various insects and animals, and grown salmon from eggs. You would also have the flexibility to incorporate your own interests! Our Afterschool Program also has access to an art room, full tech lab, a gymnasium, and greenhouse you can utilize in your classes. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Plan and implement daily educational learning opportunities for children in the After School Program using the education room, computer room, and other locations at AYCC.
- Meet weekly with and coordinate with other ASP teachers and coordinators to plan weekly and/or monthly curriculum and STEM themed activities.
- Using the themes, plan daily educational experiences in the education room, Tech Lab, or other ASP locations for all the age groups.
- Work with the ASP Team to create and implement STEM themed family events and activities.
- Work with the counselors to initiate and resource their planning of group activities. Monitor completions of plans.
- Help counselors locate materials for implementing the plans for their group.
- Provide a homework club each day with materials to support the children completing their assignments. Collaborate with schoolteachers and individual children as needed to support their homework completion.
- Work with volunteers and resource persons who can offer information, programs and/or support of learning among the children at ASP.
- Strive to develop positive values, ethical behavior, and life skills of members through teaching, discussion, and modeling.
- Participate in professional development activities to then use for training counselors to work with children in STEM learning.

WORK SCHEDULE:
- Full time at 30 hours per week
- Monday – Friday 10am-6pm
- Hours may shift depending on committee meetings or staff training.
KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- A bachelor’s degree in education or a closely related field.
- Must have certification in CPR/First Aid or be willing to be certified.
EXPERIENCE:
- At least 3 years of experience scheduling, initiating, organizing and supervising education activities.
