Primary Purpose
The lead mechanic is responsible for the on-site leadership of vehicle mechanics. Perform major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
- High school graduate or GED
- Able to obtain a valid Class B - CDL Drivers’ License with “P” and “S” endorsements
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Texas Vehicle Inspector’s License
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Must show proficiency as an expert mechanic with knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance and repair
- Able to communicate effectively with others
- Capable of managing personnel, supplies, and equipment
- Able to pass US DOT alcohol and drug tests and a physical exam
- Able to diagnose mechanical problems and perform necessary repairs
- Must furnish tools and be able to operate bus when needed
- Able to read and interpret documents such as safety fuels, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure and service manuals
Experience:
- Five (5) years’ experience as a school bus mechanic preferred
- Alief ISD school bus experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repair
- Manage shop to achieve maximum efficiency from personnel and equipment.
- Train, supervise, and assist in evaluating personnel.
- Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up-to-date preventive maintenance records.
- Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, and cooling systems.
- Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs.
- Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
- Assign work to vehicle mechanics and mechanic assistants and inspect completed work for quality.
Safety
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
Other
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
- Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Monitor and direct the work of mechanics.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Manual Trades - Maintenance Personnel

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals;
Posture: Prolonged standing, kneeling/squatting bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; may work in tiring and uncomfortable positions over, in and under vehicles Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding; regular grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent quick movements in small areas Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting and carrying up to 45 pounds and over on a daily basis
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery, hard or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress

Salary Range: Min-$24.61 Mid-$29.69 Max-$34.77 (Based on previous experience)
